Newly Developed Drivers

The HS series features newly developed drivers that provide a remarkably balanced response across a wide frequency range. The behavior of the speaker magnets and the magnetic field they create have been perfected and play a major role in flawless, natural-sounding transduction. All assemblies—including their source materials and circuit design—were carefully tested and refined to deliver absolutely accurate signal reproduction across the entire audible spectrum.

Low-Resonance Enclosure Construction

A special enclosure construction prevents unwanted resonances in the HS series, allowing playback precision to be pushed to the limit. The enclosures are made from durable MDF with optimal damping properties, ideal for studio monitors. With over 100 years of piano-building experience, Yamaha's engineers used the traditional three-way miter joint. This construction firmly anchors the cabinet panels at the corners, making the units not only very durable but also keeping unwanted resonances in check—resonances that could otherwise negatively affect the sound.

Innovative Methods to Minimize Noise

Bass-reflex ports can add punch, but they can also negatively affect the sound. Turbulence at both ends of the port generates air vibrations that create unwanted noise. Through careful analysis, Yamaha engineers optimized the bass-reflex channel and minimized its tendency to produce turbulence, resulting in noise reductions of up to 6 dB. That allows HS series monitors to meet even the strictest production requirements.

Controls and Connections

The full-range models in the HS series feature two tone controls that let you adapt the speakers to the room's acoustic properties and boundary surfaces. ROOM CONTROL lets you reduce the boosted bass that inevitably occurs when speakers sit near walls. HIGH TRIM lets you shape the high-frequency response. On the input side, the full-range speakers are fitted with jack and XLR connectors for balanced and unbalanced connections from keyboards and mixers to audio interfaces.

On the HS8S subwoofer you can set the cutoff frequency of the switchable low-pass filter (HIGH CUT) between 80 and 120 Hz. The high-pass filter at the output (LOW CUT) can also be set between 80 and 120 Hz. PHASE allows you to invert the phase at the subwoofer output. The HS8S subwoofer provides XLR outputs (L, R and EXT SUB) and inputs in both jack and XLR formats.
