Since the 1970s, Yamaha's iconic reference monitors with the white cone have set the benchmark across the audio industry for their accurate, authentic reproduction. Other studio monitors might flatter your ears at first with boosted bass and treble — but they can also lead you to make serious mistakes when judging a mix. Yamaha's HS models, by contrast, deliver reference sound, so you can rely on their honesty and accuracy throughout the entire mixing process.

Yamaha's speaker engineers combined decades of know-how with deep expertise during development. They used state-of-the-art technology and refined the product until monitors emerged that rank among the most reliable reference listening tools in the audio world. The second generation of the HS series not only improves on that legacy but also adds a new 6.5" model, giving you even more choice for your studio.

Newly Developed Drivers

The HS series features newly developed drivers that deliver an impressively balanced response across a wide frequency range. The behavior of the speaker magnets and the magnetic field they produce has been perfected and plays a major role in achieving pristine, natural-sounding transduction. All assemblies, including their raw materials and circuit design, were carefully inspected and fine-tuned to ensure absolutely accurate signal reproduction across the entire audible spectrum.

High-Performance Amplifiers

The HS-series amplifiers are perfectly matched to each model's drivers. Thanks to the "bi-amplified" design, the tweeter and woofer each have their own dedicated power amp. These amps are high-quality components that contribute significantly to the monitors' high-resolution sound and linear frequency response.

Low-Resonance Cabinet Construction

A special cabinet construction prevents unwanted resonances in the HS series, allowing playback precision to reach the limits of what's possible. The cabinets are made from durable MDF with optimal damping properties, ideal for studio monitors. With over 100 years of experience building pianos, Yamaha's engineers drew on the traditional three-way dovetail joint. This construction locks the cabinet panels together at the corners, making the units not only very robust but also keeping unwanted resonances under control that could otherwise degrade the sound.

Innovative Methods for Minimizing Noise

Bass-reflex ports can add punch, but they can also negatively affect the sound. The issue stems from turbulence at both ends of the port opening, which creates air vibrations that in turn generate unwanted noise. Through careful analysis, Yamaha engineers optimized the bass-reflex channel and reduced its tendency to turbulent flow, resulting in up to 6 dB less noise. That allows HS-series monitors to meet even the strictest and most demanding production requirements.

Controls and Connections

The HS full-range models feature two tone controls that let you adapt the speakers to the room's acoustic surfaces and boundary shapes. ROOM CONTROL lets you reduce the exaggerated bass that inevitably occurs when speakers sit near walls. HIGH TRIM lets you tweak the high-frequency response. On the input side, the full-range speakers are equipped with TRS and XLR jacks for balanced and unbalanced connections to devices ranging from keyboards and mixers to audio interfaces.

For the HS8S subwoofer you can set the cutoff frequency of the switchable low-pass filter (HIGH CUT) between 80 and 120 Hz. The high-pass filter at the output (LOW CUT) can also be set between 80 and 120 Hz. PHASE inverts the phase at the subwoofer output. The HS8S subwoofer provides XLR outputs (L, R and EXT SUB). Inputs are available in both TRS and XLR formats.
