Since the 1970s, Yamaha's cult reference monitors with the white cone have been the industry standard across audio for their accurate, authentic reproduction. Other studio monitors may flatter the ear with boosted bass and treble at first listen — but they can also lead you astray when judging a mix. Yamaha's HS models, on the other hand, deliver reference sound you can trust for honesty and accuracy throughout the mixing process.
Yamaha's speaker engineers combined decades of know-how with deep expertise during development. State-of-the-art technology was used and the product was optimized until monitors emerged that rank among the most reliable reference listening tools in the audio scene. The HS series' second generation was not only further improved but also expanded with a new 6.5" model, giving you even more choices for your studio.
Newly Developed Drivers
The HS series features newly developed drivers that provide an amazingly balanced response across a wide frequency range. The response of the speaker magnets and the magnetic field they generate have been perfected, making a major contribution to flawless, natural-sounding transduction. All assemblies, including their raw materials and circuit designs, were carefully inspected and refined to deliver absolutely accurate signal reproduction across the entire audible spectrum.
High-Performance Power Amplifiers
The amplifiers in the HS series are perfectly matched to the drivers of each model. Thanks to the "Bi-Amplified" design, the high- and low-frequency drivers each have their own amplifier. The amps are of outstanding quality and play an important role in the monitors' high-resolution sound and linear frequency response.
Low Resonance Through Cabinet Construction
A special cabinet construction prevents unwanted resonances in the HS series. This allows reproduction precision to be pushed to the limits of what is achievable. The cabinets are made from durable MDF with optimal damping properties, ideal for studio monitors. With Yamaha's more than 100 years of piano-building experience, HS engineers adopted a traditional three-way mitre joint. This construction securely anchors the cabinet panels at the corners, making the units not only extremely durable but also controlling unwanted resonances that could negatively affect the overall sound.
Innovative Techniques for Minimizing Noise
Bass-reflex openings can increase output, but they can also negatively affect sound. The issue stems from turbulence at both ends of the port, which creates air vibrations that cause unwanted noise. Through careful analysis, Yamaha engineers optimized the bass-reflex channel and minimized its tendency to produce turbulence, resulting in noise reduction of up to 6 dB. This allows HS series monitors to meet even the strictest production requirements.
Controls and Connections
The full-range models of the HS series feature two tone controls that let you adapt the speakers to the room's acoustic characteristics and the shape of its boundaries. ROOM CONTROL lets you reduce the boosted bass that inevitably occurs when speakers are placed close to walls. HIGH TRIM lets you tailor the high-frequency response. On the input side, the full-range speakers are equipped with 1/4" jack and XLR sockets for balanced and unbalanced connections to devices ranging from keyboards and mixers to audio interfaces.
On the HS8S subwoofer, the cutoff frequency of the switchable low-pass filter (HIGH CUT) can be set between 80 and 120 Hz. The high-pass filter on the output (LOW CUT) can also be set between 80 and 120 Hz. PHASE allows you to invert the phase at the subwoofer output. The HS8S subwoofer features XLR outputs (L, R and EXT SUB). Inputs are available in both 1/4" jack and XLR formats.
