Since the 1970s, Yamaha's cult reference monitors with the white cone have been the industry benchmark for their accurate, authentic reproduction. Other studio monitors with emphasized bass and treble may flatter the ears at first listen — but they can also lead you to seriously misjudge a mix. Yamaha's HS models, on the other hand, deliver reference sound, so you can rely on their honesty and accuracy throughout the entire mixing process.

Yamaha's speaker engineers combined decades of know-how with deep expertise during development. State-of-the-art technology was used and the product was refined until monitors emerged that rank among the most reliable reference monitors in the audio world. The second generation of the HS series was not only improved but also expanded with a new 6.5" model, giving you even more choice for your studio.

Newly Developed Driver

The HS series features newly developed drivers that deliver a remarkably balanced response across a wide frequency range. The magnet behavior and the magnetic field they generate were perfected and play a major role in achieving flawless, natural-sounding transduction. All assemblies, including their raw materials and circuit design, were carefully inspected and further optimized to ensure absolutely accurate signal reproduction across the entire audible spectrum.

High-Performance Amplifiers

The amplifiers in the HS series are perfectly matched to the drivers of each model. Thanks to the bi-amplified design, the tweeter and woofer each have their own dedicated amplifier. The amps themselves are of outstanding quality and contribute significantly to the monitors' high-resolution sound and linear frequency response.

Low-Resonance Cabinet Construction

A special cabinet construction prevents unwanted resonances in the HS series, allowing playback precision to be pushed to the limits of what is achievable. The enclosures are made from durable MDF with optimal damping properties, ideal for studio monitors. Drawing on more than 100 years of piano-building experience, Yamaha's HS engineers used the traditional three-way mitre. This construction securely locks the cabinet panels together at the corners, making the units very durable while keeping unwanted resonances — which could otherwise negatively affect the sound — under control.

Innovative Methods to Minimize Noise

Bass-reflex openings can add punch, but they can also negatively affect the sound. The problem is turbulence at both ends of the port, which creates air vibrations that in turn cause unwanted noise. Through careful analysis, Yamaha engineers optimized the bass-reflex channel and minimized the tendency for turbulence, resulting in up to 6 dB of noise reduction. That allows HS-series studio monitors to meet even the strictest production standards.

Controls and Connections

The fullrange models of the HS series feature two tone controls that let you adapt the speakers to the room's acoustic surfaces and boundary shapes. ROOM CONTROL lets you reduce the boosted bass that inevitably occurs when the speakers are placed near walls. HIGH TRIM lets you adjust the high-frequency response. On the input side, the fullrange speakers are equipped with TRS and XLR jacks, suitable for balanced and unbalanced connection of devices from keyboards and mixers to audio interfaces.

On the HS8S subwoofer, the cutoff frequency of the switchable low-pass filter (HIGH CUT) can be set between 80 and 120 Hz. The high-pass filter on the output (LOW CUT) can also be set between 80 and 120 Hz. PHASE allows you to invert the phase at the subwoofer output. The HS8S subwoofer provides XLR outputs (L, R and EXT SUB). Inputs are available in both TRS and XLR formats.
