Since the 1970s, Yamaha's cult reference monitors with the white cone have set the standard across the audio industry for their accurate, authentic reproduction. Other studio monitors with boosted bass and highs may flatter the ears at first listen — but they can also lead you to make major mistakes when judging a mix. The HS models from Yamaha deliver reference sound, meaning you can rely on their honesty and accuracy throughout the entire mixing process.

Yamaha's speaker engineers combined decades of expertise with deep know-how during development. In addition, state-of-the-art technology was used and the product was optimized until monitors emerged that count among the most reliable reference listening tools in the audio scene. The second generation of the HS series has not only been improved but also expanded with a new 6.5" model, giving you even more choice for your studio.

Newly Developed Drivers

The HS series features newly developed drivers that deliver a remarkably balanced response across a wide frequency range. The behavior of the speaker magnets and the magnetic field they produce have been perfected and play a major role in achieving flawless, naturally sounding acoustic conversion. All assemblies, including their raw materials and circuit design, were carefully tested and fine-tuned to ensure absolutely accurate signal reproduction across the entire audible spectrum.

High-Performance Power Amplifiers

The amplifiers in the HS series are perfectly matched to the drivers of each model. Thanks to the "bi-amplified" design, the tweeter and woofer each have their own dedicated power amp. The amps themselves are of outstanding quality and make a crucial contribution to the monitors' high-resolution sound and linear frequency response.

Low-Resonance Cabinet Design

A special cabinet construction prevents unwanted resonances in the HS series. This allows the precision of the reproduction to be pushed to the limits of what's possible. The enclosures are made from durable MDF with optimal damping properties, which is ideal for studio monitors. Because Yamaha has more than 100 years of experience building pianos, the HS engineers were able to apply the traditional three-way miter joint. This construction anchors the cabinet panels firmly at the corners, making the units not only very durable but also keeping unwanted resonances in check that could otherwise negatively affect the overall sound.

Innovative Techniques for Minimizing Noise

Bass-reflex ports can add more punch, but they can also negatively affect the sound. The problem is turbulence at both ends of the port channel, which creates air vortices that in turn cause unwanted noise. Through careful analysis, Yamaha engineers optimized the bass-reflex port and minimized its tendency to generate turbulence, resulting in noise reduction of up to 6 dB. That allows HS-series studio monitors to meet even the strictest and most demanding production requirements.

Controls and Connections

The full-range models of the HS series feature two tone controls that let you adapt the speakers to the room's acoustic characteristics and boundary surfaces. ROOM CONTROL reduces the bass boost that inevitably occurs when speakers are placed near walls. HIGH TRIM lets you adjust the high-frequency response. On the input side, the full-range speakers are equipped with jack and XLR connectors suitable for balanced and unbalanced connections to devices ranging from keyboards and mixers to audio interfaces.

On the HS8S subwoofer, the cutoff frequency of the switchable low-pass filter (HIGH CUT, trimming high frequencies) can be set between 80 and 120 Hz. The high-pass filter at the output (LOW CUT, trimming low frequencies) can also be positioned between 80 and 120 Hz. PHASE allows the phase at the subwoofer output to be inverted. The HS8S subwoofer is equipped on the output side (L, R and EXT SUB) with XLR connectors. Inputs are available in both jack and XLR format.

The Pronomic speaker stand can be adjusted in six steps from 80 cm to 130 cm in height. To prevent the top section from slipping, the stand is equipped with a safety pin. To compensate for uneven floors, the stand's rubber feet can be height-adjusted. Alternatively, the three spike feet included in the delivery can be used. These spikes provide even better stability on carpets and, thanks to their smaller contact area, offer greater decoupling of the speakers from floor vibrations.

The speaker platform is rubberized with two foam rubber strips, protecting the speaker from scratches and further isolating it from the stand. The speaker plate measures 23 cm x 23 cm. With the secure safety pin, height-adjustable rubber feet and the option to use spike feet, plus the rubberized platform, the stand leaves nothing to be desired. Additionally, cable clips are integrated for improved cable management. No tools are required to assemble the stand other than the supplied hex key.
