Since the 1970s Yamaha's iconic reference monitors with the white cone have set the standard across the audio industry for accurate, authentic reproduction. Other studio monitors may flatter your ears at first with boosted bass and treble, but they can also mislead you when judging a mix. Yamaha's HS models deliver reference sound you can trust — honest and precise throughout the entire mixing process.

Yamaha's speaker engineers combined decades of expertise with deep technical knowledge during development. State-of-the-art technology was used and the product was refined until the monitors became some of the most reliable reference listening tools in the audio world. The second generation of the HS series was not only improved, it was also expanded with a new 6.5" model, giving you even more choice for your studio.

Newly Developed Drivers

The HS series features newly developed drivers that deliver a remarkably balanced response across a wide frequency range. The magnet motor response and the magnetic field produced by the drivers were perfected and contribute significantly to a clean, natural-sounding conversion. All components, including raw materials and circuit design, were carefully tested and optimized to achieve absolutely accurate signal reproduction across the entire audible spectrum.

High-Performance Amplifiers

The amplifiers in the HS series are perfectly matched to the drivers of each model. Thanks to the bi-amped design, the tweeter and woofer each have their own dedicated amplifier. The amps are of outstanding quality and play a major role in the monitors' high-resolution sound and linear frequency response.

Low Resonance Cabinet Construction

A special cabinet design in the HS series prevents unwanted resonances, allowing playback precision to reach the limits of what is possible. The cabinets are made from durable MDF with excellent damping properties, ideal for studio monitors. With over 100 years of piano-building experience, Yamaha's engineers applied the traditional three-way miter join. This construction ties the cabinet panels firmly at the corners, making the units very durable and suppressing unwanted resonances that could negatively affect the sound.

Innovative Methods to Minimize Noise

Bass-reflex ports can increase output pressure, but they can also negatively affect sound. The issue is turbulence at both ends of the port channel, creating air vibrations that generate unwanted noise. Through careful analysis, Yamaha engineers optimized the bass-reflex channel and reduced the tendency to cause turbulence, yielding up to 6 dB of noise reduction. That lets the HS series monitors perform even under the strictest production demands.

Controls and Connections

The full-range models in the HS series offer two tone controls to adapt the speakers to the acoustic characteristics and shape of room boundaries. Use ROOM CONTROL to reduce the boosted bass that inevitably occurs when speakers sit near walls. Use HIGH TRIM to adjust the treble response. On the input side the full-range speakers are equipped with TRS and XLR connectors suitable for balanced and unbalanced connections to devices from keyboards and mixers to audio interfaces.

On the HS8S subwoofer the cutoff frequency of the switchable low-pass filter (HIGH CUT) can be set between 80 and 120 Hz. The high-pass filter at the output (LOW CUT) can also be positioned between 80 and 120 Hz. PHASE allows you to invert the phase at the subwoofer output. The HS8S subwoofer features XLR outputs (L, R and EXT SUB) and offers inputs in both TRS and XLR formats.
