Since the 1970s, Yamaha's cult reference monitors with the white cone have been the benchmark for the entire audio industry thanks to their accurate, authentic reproduction. Other studio monitors may flatter the ears at first with emphasized bass and highs — but they can also cause you to make serious mistakes when evaluating a mix. Yamaha's HS models, on the other hand, deliver reference sound, meaning you can rely on their honesty and accuracy throughout the entire mixing process.

Yamaha's speaker engineers combined decades of accumulated expertise with exceptional know-how during development. State-of-the-art technology was applied, and the product was optimized until monitors emerged that count among the most reliable reference monitors in the audio world. The second generation of the HS series was not only improved but also expanded with a new 6.5" model, giving you even more choice for your studio.

Newly Developed Drivers

The HS series features newly developed drivers that enable remarkably balanced reproduction across a wide frequency range. The response of the speaker magnets and the magnetic field they generate were perfected and contribute significantly to flawless, natural-sounding transduction. All assemblies, including their raw materials and circuit design, were carefully tested and fine-tuned to ultimately achieve absolutely accurate signal reproduction across the entire audible audio spectrum.

High-Performance Amplifiers

The amplifiers of the HS series were perfectly matched to the drivers of each model. Thanks to the bi-amplified design, the tweeter and woofer each have their own dedicated amplifier. The amps are also of outstanding quality and make an important contribution to the monitors' high-resolution sound and linear frequency response.

Resonance-Reduced Cabinet Construction

A special cabinet construction prevents unwanted resonances in the HS series. This allows the precision of reproduction to be driven to the limits of what is possible. The cabinets are made from durable MDF with optimal damping properties, which is excellent for studio monitors. Because Yamaha has over 100 years of piano-building experience, the HS engineers used the traditional three-way dovetail joint. This construction firmly anchors the cabinet panels at the corners, making the units not only very durable but also keeping unwanted resonances in check that could otherwise negatively affect the overall sound.

Innovative Techniques for Minimizing Noise

Bass-reflex openings may provide more punch, but they can also negatively affect the sound. The impairment is caused by turbulence at both ends of the port opening, which creates air vibrations that in turn generate unwanted noise. Through carefully conducted analyses, Yamaha engineers optimized the bass-reflex port and minimized the tendency for turbulence, which ultimately led to a noise reduction of up to 6 dB. This allows HS series studio monitors to meet even the strictest and most demanding production requirements.

Controls and Connections

The full-range models of the HS series feature two tone controls that let you adapt the speakers to the acoustic surface and shape of your room boundaries. Use ROOM CONTROL to reduce the boosted bass that inevitably occurs when speakers are placed near walls. With HIGH TRIM you can adjust the high-frequency reproduction. On the input side, the full-range speakers are equipped with jack and XLR sockets suitable for balanced and unbalanced connections to everything from keyboards and mixers to audio interfaces.

On the HS8S subwoofer, the cutoff frequency of the switchable low-pass filter (HIGH CUT) can be set between 80 and 120 Hz. The high-pass filter on the output (LOW CUT) can also be positioned between 80 and 120 Hz. PHASE allows the phase at the subwoofer output to be inverted. The HS8S subwoofer is equipped on the output side (L, R and EXT SUB) with XLR connectors. Inputs are available in both jack and XLR formats.

Audio Cable

The Stage JXM-0.5 is a professional, balanced audio cable that is particularly recommended as a patch or adapter cable—for example to adapt balanced keyboard or stage piano outputs or mixer outputs from 6.3 mm jack to XLR, since adapter plugs are often too bulky for the tightly spaced sockets. The JXM-0.5 is also ideal for home studio wiring.
