Since the 1970s, Yamaha's cult reference monitors with the white cone have been the industry's benchmark for accurate, authentic reproduction. While other studio monitors with strong bass and treble may flatter the ear on first listen, they can also lead you to misjudge a mix. Yamaha's HS models, by contrast, deliver reference sound — meaning you can rely on their honesty and accuracy throughout the entire mixing process.

Yamaha's loudspeaker engineers combined decades of expertise and sound judgment during development. In addition, cutting-edge technology was used and the product was optimized until the monitors became some of the most reliable reference check speakers in the audio scene. The second generation of the HS series has not only been further improved, but also expanded with a new 6.5" model, giving you even more options for your studio.

Newly Developed Drivers

The HS series features newly developed drivers that deliver a remarkably balanced response across a wide frequency range. The behavior of the speaker magnets and the magnetic field they produce were perfected and make a large contribution to a flawless, natural-sounding conversion. All assemblies, including their raw materials and circuit design, were carefully tested and re-optimized to ultimately achieve absolutely accurate signal reproduction across the entire audible spectrum.

High-Performance Amplifiers

The amplifiers in the HS series were perfectly matched to the drivers of each model. Thanks to the "bi-amplified" design, the tweeter and woofer each have their own amplifier. The amps are of outstanding quality and play an important role in the high-resolution sound and linear frequency response of these studio monitors.

Low-Resonance Cabinet Design

A special cabinet construction prevents unwanted resonances in the HS series. This allows playback precision to be pushed to the limits of what is possible. The cabinets are made from durable MDF with optimal damping properties, which makes them ideal for studio monitors. Because Yamaha has more than 100 years of experience building pianos, the HS engineers were able to employ the traditional three-way miter. This construction method secures the cabinet panels firmly at the corners, making the units not only very durable but also keeping unwanted resonances that could negatively affect the sound under control.

Innovative Methods for Minimizing Noise

Bass-reflex openings can provide more punch, but they can also negatively affect the sound. The problem is turbulence at both ends of the port, which causes air vibrations and in turn unwanted noise. Through careful analysis, Yamaha engineers optimized the bass-reflex port and minimized its tendency to create turbulence, resulting in noise reduction of up to 6 dB. This allows HS series studio monitors to meet even the strictest production requirements.

Controls and Connections

The full-range models of the HS series feature two tone controls that allow the speakers to be adapted to the acoustic characteristics and shape of room boundary surfaces. With ROOM CONTROL you can reduce the exaggerated bass that inevitably occurs when the speakers are placed near walls. With HIGH TRIM you can adjust the high-frequency response. On the input side, the full-range speakers are equipped with TRS and XLR jacks suitable for balanced and unbalanced connections of devices ranging from keyboards and mixers to audio interfaces.

On the HS8S subwoofer, the cutoff frequency of the switchable low-pass filter (HIGH CUT) can be set between 80 and 120 Hz. The high-pass filter at the output (LOW CUT) can also be positioned between 80 and 120 Hz. With PHASE you can invert the phase at the subwoofer output. The HS8S subwoofer is equipped at the output (L, R and EXT SUB) with XLR jacks. Inputs are available in both TRS and XLR formats.
