Alphorns captivate primarily with their warm, rustic sound, which can fully unfold especially outdoors or in large spaces. But also through their unique size and shape. When we hear the unusual but all the more exciting tones of an alphorn performance, we immediately associate it with dreamy mountain landscapes and beautiful nature.

From now on, Lechgold also presents this extraordinary instrument at an unbeatable price-performance ratio. Among them the F horn, which is the most played in Austria and Germany, the Fis horn preferred by the Swiss, and the somewhat smaller Bb-tuned horn common in commercial music.

Light and Clean Response

Lechgold alphorns place great value on sound, tonal variety, and tuning. With a thin wall thickness of only 7 mm and a bell diameter of 20 cm, the intonation-accurate and internally tuned alphorns score with an extremely light and clean response. The bell foot and mouthpiece knob are made of solid maple, while the robust bell ring is stained cherry.

Gold-Anodized Connection Sockets

Unlike conventional sockets, our gold-anodized connections offer extreme abrasion resistance and thus a perfect fit over years. Rubbing or mutual oxidation is excluded, allowing the precisely crafted connection sockets to seal optimally airtight.

100% Made in Austria

The Lechgold alphorns are crafted with great care from Austrian woods of higher Alpine regions. It is important that the tree grew slowly, so the annual rings lie close together. This allows improved vibration. The wood is slowly dried over several years to avoid tensions and warping.
The three-piece alphorns consist of handpipe, middle pipe, and bell pipe and are delivered including a firmly glued bell, foot, and a standard 19 mm wooden mouthpiece.

The Natural Harmonic Series

Unlike keyed and plucked instruments, alphorns produce only tones of the natural harmonic series. This series consists of tones whose frequencies are integer multiples of the fundamental tone (e.g., F horn = 43.654 Hz). Depending on the instrument’s tuning, this natural harmonic series covers 12 to 16 different tones. Conveniently, the natural tones are the same as those of conventional wind instruments. Thus, the natural harmonic series of an F alphorn corresponds to that of an F tuba or an F French horn. The series of Bb-tuned instruments corresponds to that of a Bb trombone. Switching to an alphorn is therefore very easy if you already master a “normal” wind instrument.
Only very skilled players manage to cover the entire range of an alphorn with a single mouthpiece. The comfortably playable tonal range depends on the size of the mouthpiece used—the smaller the bell diameter, the higher the tones playable.

Different Tunings via Optional Handpipes

By using a different handpipe, the tuning of the alphorn can be changed quickly and easily. This option allows playing a larger repertoire of songs without having to carry a complete second instrument. This saves weight, space, and money.

This set includes, besides the alphorn in F tuning, a second handpipe tuned to Fis.

The Mouthpiece

The conical mouthpiece of an alphorn resembles in shape and timbre that of a French horn. Besides the shape, the wood of the mouthpiece also influences the hardness of the tones.
Lechgold supplies a standard maple mouthpiece with a 19 mm inner bell diameter and a 5.5 mm bore. These are dipped in linseed oil and coated multiple times.
