Saxophonist and flutist Hans Kuijt originally invented lefreQue for the saxophone because he was dissatisfied with the sound quality of even the best instruments. He concluded that all joints between the different parts of a wind instrument negatively affect sound quality and tuning. Cork is a material that absorbs sound. While it perfectly seals a mouthpiece airtight to the instrument, it also has properties that hinder the proper transmission of optimal sound from the mouthpiece to the instrument.
