Kawai ES-920 Stage Piano - At Home. On Stage. Your Music!

The ES920 is the perfect instrument for your music - whether at home or on stage. Compact, lightweight, and shaped by modern design, the ES920 fits perfectly in any room. The RHIII keyboard, fantastic HI-XL sounds, and intuitive operation via OLED display leave nothing to be desired. The newly developed, extra-large speaker system not only delivers optimal sound reproduction but also offers the possibility to be used as a Bluetooth audio speaker for your smartphone.
Combined with the optional design stand and a pedal unit, your ES920 becomes an all-rounder that impresses not only visually. Additionally, compared to its predecessor, the ES920 convinces with a reduced total weight of only 17 kg, 5.5 kg lighter. Other features like registrations, 4 EQ faders, and easily accessible connections are small but fine details on the way to optimal performance. The high-quality F10H pedal is robust and maintenance-free thanks to optical sensors.
"Responsive Hammer III" Mechanism with Ivory Touch Key Surfaces & Touch Point Simulation
The new Responsive Hammer III (RHIII) mechanism features various grand piano mechanism characteristics essential for replicating a realistic motion sequence. Thanks to the precise triple sensor technology, the player experiences a very natural playing feel. Different weighting zones create an authentic grand piano sensation.

Additionally, all keys have integrated weights, and the hammer weighting has been recalculated to achieve an even better balance between pronounced fortissimo while still allowing fatigue-free playing with perfect control in pianissimo.
Furthermore, the ES920 digital piano features Kawai Ivory Touch key surfaces, which absorb finger moisture with their ivory-like properties, providing the player with a grippy surface and thus excellent playing control. Additionally, the ES920 keyboard is equipped with touch point simulation, ensuring perfect control during pianissimo playing.

Impressive Recordings of Shigeru Kawai SK-EX, SK-5 & Kawai EX Concert Grand Pianos with Harmonic Imaging XL & 88-Key Sampling
The ES920 reproduces the outstanding sound of the Kawai concert grand pianos SK-EX, SK-5, and EX. All 88 keys of these three extraordinary grand piano models were meticulously recorded and analyzed. The unique character of each note and the wide dynamic range of the sounds allow the pianist to express their emotional playing... from soft pianissimo to powerful fortissimo.
With the integrated Virtual Technician function, the tonal character of these acoustic piano sounds can be easily modified. For example, you can adjust the intensity of string and damper resonance or the noise of the falling hammers. Such personal settings can then be enhanced with a reverb effect that adds additional spatial depth to the sound.
Wide Selection of Additional Sounds
In addition to the realistic acoustic piano sounds, the ES920 offers an extensive selection of sounds such as electric piano, drawbar or church organ, strings, or choir, enabling the player to perform a wide variety of genres.
The dual mode allows simultaneous playing of two different sounds (e.g., grand piano and strings) on the keyboard, while the split or four-hand mode divides the keyboard into left and right zones. The respective volume balance can be quickly and easily adjusted at the push of a button.

Bluetooth Audio/MIDI
In addition to the USB-to-host port and MIDI connections, the ES920 is also equipped with Bluetooth MIDI technology, enabling wireless communication with smart devices (e.g., smartphone or tablet). This gives you the ability to comfortably use a wide range of music-related apps in conjunction with your ES920 digital piano.
Or simply use the Bluetooth audio interface. Just connect your smartphone to the ES920 and enjoy all your music directly through the ES920’s speaker system. This saves the additional purchase of a Bluetooth speaker and sounds fantastic.

Accompaniment Styles
The ES920’s rhythm section includes automatic accompaniment arrangements suitable for numerous musical styles. The 100 different arrangements consist of drums, bass, guitar, organ, etc., allowing the player to enjoy an even livelier performance thanks to the integrated instrumental band.
USB to Device Functionality with MP3/WAV Recording & Playback
The ES920 model is equipped with USB ports that not only allow MIDI data exchange with a connected computer. For example, you can also save data directly to a USB storage device or load data from a storage device directly into the instrument.

This USB to Device functionality enables saving registration slots and songs (stored in the ES920’s internal memory) to an external storage device or playing MIDI files (SMF) stored there directly with the instrument without additional hardware. Direct playback of songs by your favorite artists in MP3 or WAV format is also possible.
You can also record your own playing in MP3 or WAV format and, for example, send it to your friends by email, listen to the songs on a smartphone or PC, or burn them to CD on your PC.

Extensive Connectivity Options
The ES920 offers a range of connectivity options, such as audio outputs (LINE OUT) for connection to an amplifier for use in larger rooms (e.g., churches or schools).
With the MIDI IN/OUT and USB to Host connections, flexible connection to computers or other MIDI devices is possible. Thanks to the stereo input (LINE IN), the audio output of a laptop or tablet PC can be connected directly to the ES920 and played back through the built-in speakers.

The instrument is introduced and explained to beginners in a playful, relaxed way. Starting with familiar, simple melodies up to two-handed playing of complete songs, theoretical knowledge such as reading notes, rhythm, dynamics, and much more is taught alongside the exercises. The simple exercises guarantee quick learning success.

Actually, I wouldn't have needed the piano stool, headphones and school at all, I had them from my previous purchase at Kirstein, when I had bought a cheaper stage piano at the beginning of 2019. But since piano and base with pedal unit are ordered individually *expensive* than the complete package I just ordered the complete package
and stool & Co. then sold together with my old piano.
The delivery promise with 2-4 days delivery time was kept without problems, Monday morning ordered and Thursday morning delivered in 4 large boxes.
The substructure was relatively easy to assemble. Only the screws for the pedal unit you have to screw in so to speak in the "blind flight" because you can not see the holes on the opposite side. A little fiddly, but manageable. The bracket for the cables on the cross wall of the piano stand was then also attached to the wrong side, which had to be moved, but all no problem.
The piano itself is very well packaged. The plastic surfaces of the music stand and the display on the piano are provided with a protective film that must of course be removed before use.
In the piano box you will also find the manual with over 140 pages, and the whole 5x for German, English, French, Italian and Spanish. Here my green heart bleeds in view of the fact that I probably do not need 80% of these manuals and will dispose of in the paper bin.
If you hold down the keys "Piano2", "Organ" and "Strings/Choir" while switching on, the piano also tells you the current firmware version. This was with my device V1.01, but in the meantime firmware V1.11 is already released, so first make a firmware update via a USB stick.
Then the first play. Wow, what a difference to my previous stage piano, which also only cost a third of the price of the ES 920. The sound is absolutely fantastic and clear. The ES 920 has "only" 38 sounds, but in combination with the effects, the amp simulation and the fact that you can adjust all parameters of the piano with the "Virtual Technican" multiplies the sound possibilities enormously. So with the grand pianos you can
how far the "lid" is open or closed. And a jazz piano with a "chorus" effect sounds exactly like the "honky-tonk piano" on my previous stage piano. Layering" sounds, i.e. playing 2 different voices at the same time, also works very easily. The
volume balance can be changed in 10 steps. And also the 4 sliders for the equalizer next to the display make the quick sound adjustment very easy.
The rhythm section is also very impressive. Rich bass runs and always nicely played fill-ins make playing with the auto accompaniment a pleasure. Sure, I want to play more piano, but the existence of an auto accompaniment was for me, I come from the keyboard / organ corner but decisive for the purchase decision.
The recording function is also very clear and easy to use and also the conversion of MIDI recordings into audio files for the USB stick was easy to manage.
A particular highlight for me is the keyboard. Sure, it's plastic, but unlike the previous piano (which also had plastic keys), the keyboard actually doesn't feel like plastic at all. The surface feels better somehow and the touch response is really high quality, as if you were playing on a solid wooden keyboard.
The menu navigation of the piano is also very clear and very well described in the manual. If the display is too small for you, you can install the Piano Remote app on your tablet and use it to set all the functions of the piano from the tablet, provided you have the latest firmware on the piano (see above). The app is much clearer in the settings of the Virtual Technican than the small OLED display on the piano could ever be. Clear recommendation for anyone who wants to experiment with the settings.
After a week with the ES 920 I am still thrilled. The very good keyboard really motivates to play and the tonal possibilities are huge. Fortunately, the thing also offers the possibility to save up to 28 settings to have so good sounds quickly available. And of course you can copy all settings to a USB stick and read them again.
For the price of just under 1800 € a very nice and recommendable instrument. By the way, in my purchase decision it prevailed against the competitors "Yamaha P515", "Roland RD88" and "Roland FP-90X", especially because of the automatic accompaniment.

The headphones are great and it's really fun to practice without disturbing the others. So overall a good investment for the whole family and if I could I would give 4.5 stars.
