D-PRE (Discrete Class-A Mic Preamps)

Preamps form the starting point for great sound. If their quality isn’t right, you won’t get a truly excellent mix no matter how hard the engineer works. In other words: they set the tone for the whole mix and largely determine how good it can ultimately sound. The MG mixers feature Yamaha’s studio-grade, discrete Class-A preamps. They use an inverted Darlington design that, thanks to a dual-transistor cascade, delivers more drive at lower impedance. D-PRE amps provide fat, natural-sounding bass and silky highs with an extremely low tendency to distort.

Thanks to their wide, very balanced frequency response, the preamps handle all imaginable signal sources without overemphasizing any frequency band. This clean sonic foundation saves you a lot of time and effort because large EQ moves or additional processing to correct the mix become unnecessary.

Op-Amps for Highest-Quality Sound

The preamp determines sonic quality, while the op-amp ICs are among the most important components inside the preamp. The MG Series features new, high-quality, custom-made MG01 op-amps developed in close collaboration with the semiconductor manufacturer. While many op-amps are optimized for circuit design and efficiency, Yamaha places an even higher priority on sonic quality, so an off-the-shelf chip was not acceptable.

The MG01 op-amps use redesigned circuits where internal components and wiring are perfectly matched. High-grade materials in their purest form—for example, wafers of ultra-pure silicon and copper wiring—were used so that every single component of the chip contributes to outstanding resolution.

Switchable Phantom Power and Pad Switches

With switchable phantom power, the MG consoles allow you to connect condenser microphones and enjoy their advantages over dynamics, such as extended frequency response, much higher dynamic range and better sonic detail. The input channels with pad switches accept both mic- and line-level sources. Using the pad button you can attenuate high-level inputs—for example, mic’d instruments during a concert that could otherwise clip and seriously damage the mix.

One-Button Compressors

Compression plays a central role in almost every studio production or live sound setup. By cleverly controlling dynamics with a compressor you can give basslines more punch, make snares tighter, bring vocals forward or thicken live guitar stacks. But mastering the complexity of hardware compressors can take countless hours. Yamaha’s One-Button compressors are an innovative in-house design that lets you set the compressor optimally with a single control.

EQ and High-Pass Filter

There’s nothing better than a reliable equalizer when you need to make nuanced tone adjustments. The MG Series benefits from Yamaha’s unparalleled experience in audio equipment design. All mono channels feature excellent 3-band EQs for precise control over the sound. Additional high-pass filters let you remove unwanted stage rumble and other low-frequency noise, making the mix noticeably clearer and cleaner.

Aux / Effect Sends / Groups

The MG mixers provide AUX sends to expand a PA or studio setup. You can use them to route extra effects, send outputs to external recording devices or feed a monitoring system. The main stereo bus also has its own send controls. The MG06/06X and MG10/10XU models only offer a single stereo mix bus. Other models additionally include one or two stereo subgroup buses and corresponding outputs for convenient channel grouping. Alongside the channel faders you'll find switches for clear group assignment.

Numerous Input and Output Connections

All models feature high-quality, balanced Neutrik XLR connectors on the mono channels. The stereo channels also include XLR jacks. The mono inputs are implemented as combo jacks and accept both MIC and LINE levels. Two of the stereo inputs are fitted with an XLR connector and two jack connectors. The XLR socket accepts mic-level signals while the two jack sockets are designed for line level. You can feed either mono or stereo line signals (except on the 10-channel model). The wiring of the other two stereo channels varies by model: on the 20-channel model the XLR accepts mic level while two phono connectors are provided for mono or stereo line signals.

On the 16- and 12-channel models, two jack connectors accept stereo line signals. Each stereo channel also provides 2TR phono jacks that serve as independent inputs for external sources such as CD players. The 10-channel model adds an extra stereo channel with a pair of jack sockets for line signals. On XU models any source coming in via USB can be assigned to one of the stereo channels. In addition to the main stereo outputs (XLR L/R, jack L/R), MG mixers offer many outputs for groups (jack format), AUX/FX (jack format), monitor (jack L/R) and headphones (stereo jack). The mix outputs can be used for tasks like monitoring or mastering.

Internal SPX Digital Effects

Effects add polish and professionalism to any mix, musical or spoken. The MG-X/-XU models are equipped with Yamaha’s world-renowned SPX multi-effect processor, delivering 24 editable, top-quality digital effects ideal for enhancing the mix. Whether you want to add the right amount of depth to a speech or breathe fresh life into a live concert, especially the excellent reverb and solid delay can improve the sense of space in a realistic and natural way. The FC5 footswitch is available optionally to switch effects on and off (MG10XU / 12XU / 16XU / 20XU).

Metal Chassis

The MG Series is built to last and therefore features a solid, powder-coated metal chassis of exceptional build quality. The shape optimizes internal convection cooling, while the power supply is cleanly isolated from the analog circuits inside, which not only prevents unwanted noise but also benefits component lifetime. In addition, forces such as pressure or pull on the controls are absorbed by the sturdy chassis rather than being transmitted directly to the circuit board or electronic components, further improving the reliability and longevity of the MG Series.

USB Audio Interface with 2 Inputs and 2 Outputs at 24-Bit/192 kHz Resolution

MG Series mixers feature digital connections so digitally stored material can be played back directly through the console. USB not only supports PC but also Apple devices like iPhone and iPad (2 and newer with Apple\'s Camera Connection Kit or Lightning to USB Camera Adapter). The USB protocol uses asynchronous data transfer. Audio data is clocked precisely by the MG mixer, enabling recording and playback in excellent quality.
