D-PRE (Discrete Class-A Microphone Preamps)

Preamps are the starting point for great sound. If they aren’t up to the task, no amount of skill at the console will produce an outstanding mix. In other words: the foundation for the final sound is set right here. MG Series mixers feature Yamaha’s studio-grade, discrete Class-A preamps. They use an inverted Darlington configuration and a so-called dual-transistor cascade that delivers more drive at lower impedance. D-PRE amps provide fat, natural bass and silky highs with very low distortion tendency.

Thanks to their wide, very balanced frequency response these preamps handle virtually any source without overemphasizing certain bands. That clean sonic foundation saves you time and effort because extreme EQ moves or other corrective processing become unnecessary.

Op Amps For Highest-Quality Sound

The preamp determines sound quality, and the operational amplifier ICs are among the preamp’s most important components. The MG Series features newly designed, high-quality MG01 op amps that we developed in close cooperation with the semiconductor manufacturer. While other op amps may optimize circuit design and efficiency, Yamaha prioritized sonic quality, so an off-the-shelf chip wasn’t acceptable.

The MG01 op amps use redesigned circuits where internal components and wiring are perfectly matched. Only top-grade materials in their purest form — like high-purity silicon wafers and copper wiring — are used, so each component contributes to outstanding resolution.

Switchable Phantom Power And PAD Switch

With switchable phantom power the MG consoles accept condenser microphones with all their advantages over dynamics, including extended frequency response, higher dynamic range and improved sonic detail. The input channels with PAD switches accept both mic- and line-level sources. The PAD button attenuates high-level inputs — for example mic’d instruments on stage that might otherwise clip and seriously damage the mix.

One-Button Compressors

Compression is central in almost every studio production or live sound setup. By taming dynamics you can give bass more punch, tighten snares, bring vocals forward or add heft to live guitar stacks. But mastering the complexity of hardware compressors can take countless hours. Yamaha’s innovative One-Button compressors let you set the compressor optimally with a single control.

EQ And High-Pass Filter

There’s nothing better than a reliable equalizer when you need subtle tonal shaping. The MG Series benefits from Yamaha’s unparalleled experience in audio design. All mono channels include excellent 3-band EQs for precise tonal control. Additional high-pass filters remove unwanted stage rumble and other low-frequency noise, making the mix noticeably clearer and cleaner.

AUX / Effect Sends / Groups

MG mixers feature AUX sends to expand your PA or studio setup. These can feed additional effects, route outputs to external recorders or supply a monitor system. The master bus also has its own send controls. The MG06 / 06X and MG10 / 10XU models have a single stereo master bus only; other models include one or two stereo group buses and corresponding outputs for convenient channel grouping. Next to each channel fader you’ll find switches for clear group assignment.

Numerous Input And Output Connections

All models feature high-quality, balanced Neutrik XLR connectors on the mono channels. The stereo channels also include XLR jacks. The mono inputs are combo jacks accepting both mic and line levels. Two of the stereo inputs combine an XLR connector with two jack inputs: the XLR accepts mic-level, while the two jacks accept line-level signals. You can feed either mono or stereo line signals (except on the 10-channel model). The wiring of the other two stereo channels varies by model: on the 20-channel model the XLR accepts mic-level while two phono connectors are provided for mono or stereo line signals.

On the 16- and 12-channel models two jack inputs accept stereo line signals. Each stereo channel also features 2TR phono inputs for external sources like CD players. The 10-channel model has an additional stereo channel with a pair of jack inputs for line signals. On XU models any USB input source can be assigned to one of the stereo channels. In addition to the main stereo outputs (XLR L/R, jack L/R), MG consoles offer numerous outputs for groups (jack), AUX/FX (jack), monitor (jack L/R) and headphones (stereo jack). The master outputs can be used for monitoring, mastering or other tasks.

Internal SPX Digital Effects

Effects add polish and professionalism to any mix. The MG-X / -XU models include Yamaha’s highly regarded SPX multi-effect processor, offering 24 editable, first-class digital effects that enhance a mix. You can add just the right depth to a speech or breathe life into a live show. The excellent reverbs and delays in particular can realistically and naturally enhance a mix’s spatial sense. The FC5 footswitch is available optionally to toggle effects on and off (MG10XU / 12XU / 16XU / 20XU).

Metal Chassis

The MG Series is built to last and features a solid, powder-coated metal chassis of outstanding build quality. The enclosure shape supports internal convection cooling, while the power supply is neatly separated from the analog circuitry to reduce noise and improve component life. Forces like push or pull on the controls are absorbed by the sturdy chassis instead of stressing the PCB or electronics, which further enhances reliability and longevity.

Internal Universal Power Supply

The highly efficient internal universal power supply lets you use the MG Series worldwide without worry, even where mains voltage fluctuates. The internal supply also simplifies rack mounting for installations since no bulky external adapter or extra peripherals are needed. (* MG12 / 16 / 20 / 12XU / 16XU / 20XU)

Rack Mount Kit Included

The 16- and 20-channel MG models ship with rack ears so they can be placed on a table or mounted in a rack. This makes the mixers ideal for both mobile use and permanent installs. The extremely robust yet manageable design allows stable placement and minimizes setup time. *An optional rack kit "RK-MG12" is available for the MG12 and MG12XU models.

USB Audio Interface With 2 Inputs And 2 Outputs At 24-Bit / 192 kHz

MG mixers include digital connectivity so digital sources can be routed directly through the console. USB supports not only PCs but also Apple devices like iPhone and iPad (2 and newer via Apple’s "Lightning to USB Camera" adapter). The USB protocol uses asynchronous transfer so audio is clocked precisely by the MG console, enabling high-quality recording and playback.
