The glockenspiel was bought as a Christmas gift for our 7 year old daughter. She immediately got along with it and could immediately play some simple melodies on it (she also plays the flute). This is facilitated in addition to the color scheme also by the arrangement of the (half) tones as with piano keys.

For children who show recognizably real interest and for making music together, however, I would probably switch to a higher quality instrument fairly soon.
