Optimized Cimbasso for Stage Music, Banda, Opera Orchestras & More!
With the Lechgold Cimbasso FC-18/5L you get a high-quality instrument crafted in a multi-stage production process with excellent intonation. Plus: the instrument receives a personal final inspection by an experienced brass instrument maker on site.
The Lechgold Cimbasso FC-18/5L has been modernized with the current product line, further optimized and now scores — alongside an impressive tone and high-quality workmanship — with outstanding ergonomics and comfortable handling.
Cimbasso With High-Quality Components
The cimbasso combines the sound character of a trombone with the tuning and playability of an F tuba, making it the ideal link between these two registers. The Lechgold cimbasso features 5 rotary valves (4 + 1) and an adjustable tuning compensation (left hand) for the 2nd slide. The bell diameter measures 286 mm, the bore is 18.40 mm.
The valve cluster is fitted with original Minibal joints, guaranteeing perfect and reliable valve action. Developed in 1994 by Martin Seibold in Dietramszell (Upper Bavaria), the Minibal joint ensures precise, reliable and silent rotary valve movement! The patented ball joint has proven itself over the past 30 years and is appreciated by amateur and professional musicians alike.
Tonal Quality
By using the finest materials, Lechgold instruments deliver an outstanding tonal character across all registers. Easy response and impeccable intonation provide the foundation for true playing enjoyment.

So here it is.
The case is great and not heavy (I can't say how long the zippers will last, they don't seem trustworthy), the instrument is well stored in it. The finish is not objectionable. The sound is, well, cimbasso. Those who are used to tubas will be startled or surprised, but once you have got used to it, it enchants with a sonorous and carrying sound. The response is relatively easy, sometimes you have to be careful that the sound doesn't break out at fortissimo, but otherwise everything is fine. The handmade ones on YouTube sound better, but are not available at this price ;-).
What bothers me? The cables are brutally stiff. It took a lot of trial and error with lubricants until the tuning slide could be operated comfortably with one hand. If Kirstein were to carry out the promised quality control, they could pay a little more attention to this. The pin is too short for me, I'm just very tall and sit high, so my instrument maker will have to look for a solution. Or you could put a book or something underneath it.
A mouthpiece is included, but the bore is too narrow for my taste. I play it with a Perantucci PT-64, which fits perfectly (for me).
My personal conclusion: if you want or have to have a cimbasso, you can't go wrong for the price
