For alphorn players who are often and gladly "on the road" with their instrument—such as hiking in the mountains, attending alphorn gatherings, or gigs on stage—the Lechgold Wanderalphorn is ideal due to its compact transport dimensions.

The completely Austrian-made alphorn for mobile use consists of five tube parts plus the bell (each 60 cm long) and naturally comes in a precisely fitting gig bag with adjustable backpack straps. Also included are the matching socket protector set and a tin of socket grease.

Easy and Clean Response

Round tone, precise tuning, and easy response are key values in the manufacture of Lechgold alphorns. With a thin wall thickness of 7 mm and a bell diameter of 220 mm, these intonation-stable and well-tuned alphorns score with a light and clean response.

The alphorn is made of solid spruce wood, the bell ring from solid cherry wood. The rattan wrapping and final lacquer finish ensure high stability and low sensitivity to external influences.

Gold-anodized & Absolutely Tight Connecting Sockets

The connecting sockets of the tubes are gold-anodized and therefore extremely abrasion-resistant.

Stability, perfect fit, and absolute tightness are guaranteed by three rubber seals on the connecting sockets of the tube ends. This highest-quality connection technique was adopted from the Lechgold "top-class" model and is now used on all Lechgold alphorns.

The Mouthpiece

Lechgold supplies a maple mouthpiece with a 19 mm bell inner diameter and a 5.5 mm bore as the standard mouthpiece. These are dipped in linseed oil and coated multiple times. The included mouthpiece is basically suitable for all registers. If you later specialize in high or low registers, Lechgold offers a wide selection of alternative mouthpieces with smaller or larger diameters.

Lechgold alphorns are crafted with care from Austrian woods from higher Alpine regions. It is important that the tree grew slowly so that the growth rings are close together. This allows for improved vibration. The wood is slowly dried over several years to avoid tension and warping.

The Natural Harmonic Series of the Alphorn

Unlike keyed and plucked instruments, alphorns produce only tones of the natural harmonic series. This series consists of tones whose frequencies are integer multiples of the fundamental tone (e.g., F horn = 43.654 Hz). Depending on the instrument's tuning, this natural harmonic series covers 12 to 16 different tones.

Conveniently, the natural tones are the same as those of conventional wind instruments. Thus, the natural harmonic series of an F alphorn corresponds to that of an F tuba or an F French horn. The series of Bb-tuned instruments corresponds to that of a Bb trombone. Switching to an alphorn is therefore easy if you already master a "normal" wind instrument.
