For alphorn players who are often and gladly "on the road" with their instrument - for example hiking in the mountains, at alphorn gatherings, or gigs on stage - the Lechgold hiking alphorn is ideal due to its compact transport dimensions.

The completely Austrian-made alphorn for mobile use consists of five tube parts plus bell (each approx. 60 cm long) and naturally comes in a perfectly fitting gig bag with adjustable backpack straps. Also included are the matching ferrule protector set and a tin of ferrule grease.

Easy and Clean Response

Round tone, precise tuning, and easy response - these are the priorities in the manufacture of Lechgold alphorns. With a thin wall thickness of 7 mm and a bell diameter of 220 mm, these intonation-stable and well-tuned alphorns score with a light and clean response.

The alphorn is made of solid spruce wood, the bell ring from solid cherry wood. The rattan wrapping and final lacquer finish provide high stability and low sensitivity to external influences.

Gold-Anodized & Absolutely Tight Connecting Ferrules

The connecting ferrules of the tubes are gold-anodized and therefore extremely abrasion-resistant.

Stability, perfect fit, and absolute tightness are ensured by three rubber sealing rings on the connecting ferrules at the tube ends. This highest-quality connection technique was adopted from the Lechgold "top-class" model and is now used on all Lechgold alphorns.

The Mouthpiece

As a standard mouthpiece, Lechgold supplies a maple mouthpiece with a 19 mm bell inner diameter and a 5.5 mm bore. These are dipped in linseed oil and lacquered multiple times. The included mouthpiece is basically suitable for all pitch ranges. Those who later specialize in high or low registers have a wide selection of alternative mouthpieces with smaller or larger diameters at Lechgold.

Lechgold alphorns are handcrafted from Austrian woods from higher alpine regions. It is important that the tree grew slowly, so the growth rings are close together. This allows improved vibration. The wood is slowly dried over several years to avoid tension and warping.

The Natural Harmonic Series of the Alphorn

Unlike keyed and plucked instruments, alphorns produce only tones from the natural harmonic series. This series consists of tones whose frequencies are integer multiples of the fundamental tone (e.g., F horn = 43.654 Hz). Depending on the instrument's tuning, this natural harmonic series covers 12 to 16 different tones.

Conveniently, the natural tones are the same as those of conventional wind instruments. Thus, the natural harmonic series of an F alphorn corresponds to that of an F tuba or an F French horn. The series of Bb-tuned instruments corresponds to that of a Bb trombone. Switching to an alphorn is therefore easy if you already master a "normal" wind instrument.
