Alphorns captivate primarily with their warm, rustic sound, which can fully unfold especially outdoors or in large spaces. But also through their unique size and shape. When we hear the unusual but all the more exciting tones of alphorn playing, we immediately associate it with dreamy mountain landscapes and beautiful nature.

From now on, Lechgold also presents this extraordinary instrument at an unbeatable price-performance ratio. Including the F horn, which is the most played in Austria and Germany, the F# horn preferred by the Swiss, and the somewhat smaller Bb-tuned horn common in commercial music.
In addition to complete alphorns, individual hand tubes are also available, with which the tuning of the instrument can be changed.

Light and Clean Response

Lechgold alphorns place great value on sound, tonal variety, and tuning. With a thin wall thickness of only 7 mm and a bell diameter of 20 cm, the intonation-accurate and well-tuned alphorns score with an extremely light and clean response. The bell foot and mouthpiece knob are made of solid maple, while the robust bell ring is stained cherry.

Gold-Anodized Connection Sockets

Unlike conventional sockets, our gold-anodized connections offer extreme abrasion resistance and thus a perfect fit over years. Rubbing or mutual oxidation is excluded, allowing the precisely crafted connection sockets to seal optimally airtight.

100% Made in Austria

The Lechgold alphorns are crafted with great care from Austrian woods from higher Alpine regions. It is important that the tree grew slowly, so the annual rings are close together. This enables improved vibration. The wood is slowly dried over several years to avoid tension and warping.
The three-piece alphorns consist of hand, middle, and bell tubes and are delivered including a firmly glued bell, foot, and a standard 19 mm wooden mouthpiece.

The Harmonic Series

Unlike keyed and plucked instruments, alphorns produce only tones of the harmonic series. This series consists of tones whose frequency is an integer multiple of the fundamental tone (e.g., F horn = 43.654 Hz). Depending on the instrument's tuning, this harmonic series covers 12 to 16 different tones. Conveniently, the natural tones are the same as those of conventional wind instruments. Thus, the harmonic series of an F alphorn corresponds to that of an F tuba or an F horn. The series of Bb-tuned instruments corresponds to that of a Bb trombone. Switching to an alphorn is therefore very easy if you already master a "normal" wind instrument.
Only very skilled players manage to cover the entire range of an alphorn with a single mouthpiece. The comfortable playable tone range depends on the size of the mouthpiece used—the smaller the bell diameter, the higher the tones playable.

Different Tunings via Optional Hand Tubes

By using a different hand tube, the tuning of the alphorn can be changed quickly and easily. This option offers the possibility to play a larger repertoire of songs without having to carry a complete second instrument. This saves weight, space, and money.
Our range includes hand tubes in all tunings (F, Bb, and F#) and versions.

The Mouthpiece

The conical mouthpiece of an alphorn resembles the shape and tone color of a horn mouthpiece. Besides the shape, the wood of the mouthpiece also influences the hardness of the tones.
Lechgold supplies a maple mouthpiece with a 19 mm inner bell diameter and a 5.5 mm bore as standard. These are dipped in linseed oil and coated multiple times.
