Kirstein Baritone Saxophone Mouthpiece - Baritone 6 Student - with Ligature!
No clarinet or saxophone plays without a mouthpiece and reed. Strictly speaking, the mouthpiece is the crucial part, as it forms the so-called sound generator, also known as the tone generator by acousticians. The beautiful, expensive clarinet made of fine wood and the silver-plated or gold-lacquered shiny saxophone are—physically speaking—"only" the resonators.
So the mouthpiece and reed produce the primary sound waves that the instrument then responds to, much like a well-tuned transmitter. In short: without a good mouthpiece (and a matching reed), nothing works at all.
This is how even an affordable instrument sounds like a master instrument!
