No clarinet or saxophone plays without a mouthpiece and reed. Strictly speaking, the mouthpiece is the crucial part, as it forms the so-called sound generator, also called the tone generator by acousticians. The beautiful, expensive clarinet made of fine wood and the silver-plated or gold-lacquered shining saxophone are - physically speaking - "only" the resonators.

So the mouthpiece and reed produce the primary sound waves that the instrument then responds to, much like a well-tuned transmitter. In other words: without a good mouthpiece (and equally good reed), nothing works at all.
