The new HS3 and HS4 studio monitors from Yamaha expand the successful HS series downward. The two compact two-way speakers feature 3.5 (HS3) and 4.5 (HS4) inch woofers as well as powerful Class-D amplifiers. The active electronics with multiple connections and professional room tuning options are integrated into the left speaker, while the right speaker is passive, keeping wiring clear and simple even on the go. This makes the HS3 and HS4 monitors professional tools for users who need uncompromising accuracy even in tight spaces or mobile setups.

The HS3 and HS4 continue the design philosophy and expertise of earlier Yamaha studio monitors. No effort was spared to develop an optimal product. The result is carefully selected components such as a powerful Class-D amplifier, a highly durable MDF cabinet, and woofers and soft-dome tweeters that deliver source-accurate sound despite their compact size.

They also feature the patented "Twisted Flare Port" technology, which reduces air turbulence in the bass reflex opening, resulting in clear and precise bass. This is the secret behind the HS3 and HS4’s outstanding resolution, sound image, and great depth—with a linear frequency response across all bands without altering the original sound.

Inputs and Controls for Every Application

The rear of the HS3 and HS4 features combined XLR/TRS jack (COMBO), RCA, and stereo mini inputs, enabling connection to a wide range of professional and personal devices such as computers, audio interfaces, mixers, and electronic instruments. The most frequently used controls—power switch, volume knob, and headphone jack—are easily accessible on the front.

Compact and Easy to Transport

The compact size of the HS3 and HS4 is made possible by the highly efficient Class-D amplifier. Using one amplifier for two speakers allowed us to reduce the overall weight and simplify cable connections. Even in a small bedroom studio, they take up little space and are easy to carry.

Since the 1970s, Yamaha’s iconic reference monitors with the white cone have set the standard for the entire audio industry thanks to their accurate, authentic reproduction. While other studio monitors with boosted bass and treble might flatter your ears at first listen, they can also lead to poor mix decisions. Yamaha’s HS models deliver reference sound, meaning you can rely on their honesty and accuracy throughout the mixing process.

Yamaha’s speaker engineers combined decades of expertise with great skill during development. Cutting-edge technology was used and the product was refined until the monitors became some of the most reliable reference monitors in the audio scene. The second generation of the HS series not only improved further but also added a new 6.5" model, giving you even more options for your studio.

Newly Developed Transducers

The HS series features newly developed transducers that enable remarkably balanced reproduction over a wide frequency range. The response of the speaker magnets and the magnetic field they generate have been perfected, playing a major role in flawless, natural sound conversion. All components, including their raw materials and circuit design, were carefully tested and optimized to achieve absolutely accurate signal reproduction across the entire audible audio spectrum.

High-Performance Amplifiers

The amplifiers of the HS series are perfectly matched to the transducers of each model. Thanks to the "bi-amplified" design, tweeters and woofers each have their own amplifier. The amps are also of outstanding quality and contribute significantly to the high-resolution sound and linear frequency response of the studio monitors.

Low Resonance Cabinet Construction

A special cabinet construction prevents unwanted resonances in the HS series. This allows playback precision to be pushed to the limit. The cabinets are made from durable MDF with optimal damping properties, ideal for studio monitors. Drawing on Yamaha’s 100+ years of piano-building experience, the HS engineers used traditional three-way miter joints. This construction firmly anchors the cabinet panels at the corners, making the units very durable and keeping unwanted resonances in check that could negatively affect the overall sound.

Innovative Methods to Minimize Noise

Bass reflex ports can add pressure but can also negatively affect sound. The problem is turbulence at both ends of the port opening, causing air vibrations that generate unwanted noise. Through careful analysis, Yamaha engineers optimized the bass reflex channel and minimized turbulence, resulting in noise reduction of up to 6 dB. This allows HS series studio monitors to meet the strictest and most demanding production standards.

Controls and Connections

The full-range HS models feature two tone controls that allow the speakers to be adapted to the acoustic characteristics and shape of the room boundaries. ROOM CONTROL lets you reduce the boosted bass that inevitably occurs when speakers are placed near walls. HIGH TRIM lets you adjust the treble response. On the input side, the full-range speakers are equipped with jack and XLR sockets suitable for balanced and unbalanced connections to all kinds of devices from keyboards to mixers and audio interfaces.

The HS8S subwoofer allows the cutoff frequency of the switchable low-pass filter (HIGH CUT) to be set between 80 and 120 Hz. The high-pass filter at the output (LOW CUT) can also be positioned between 80 and 120 Hz. PHASE lets you invert the phase at the subwoofer output. The HS8S subwoofer features XLR outputs (L, R, and EXT SUB). Inputs are available in both jack and XLR formats.

XLR Cables

Stage Pro-Line cables use only oxygen-free copper. This ensures durable, consistent quality and protects against corrosion. The connectors are hand-soldered and feature strain relief clamps, so the solder joints are free from mechanical stress. A high-density copper shield effectively protects the audio signal from impact noise and electromagnetic interference, such as from power supplies and power cables. This guarantees low conductor capacitance and crystal-clear audio transmission.
