D-PRE (Discrete Class-A Microphone Preamps)

Preamps are the starting point for great sound. If their quality isn’t up to par, you can’t expect a truly excellent mix no matter how skilled the engineer is. In other words: the preamps set the course for how well a mix can ultimately sound. The MG consoles feature Yamaha’s studio-capable, discrete Class-A preamps. They use an inverted Darlington circuit that, thanks to a dual-transistor cascade, delivers more drive at lower impedance. D-PRE amps provide a fat, natural-sounding low end and silky highs with very low distortion.

Thanks to their wide and very balanced frequency response, these preamps handle any source without overemphasizing specific frequency bands. This clean sonic foundation saves you time and effort because you’ll need fewer drastic EQ moves or additional processing to correct the mix.

Op Amps For Highest-Quality Sound

The preamp determines sonic quality, and the op-amp ICs are among the most important parts of the preamp. The MG series features new, high-quality, custom-made MG01 op amps developed in close collaboration with the semiconductor manufacturer. While many op-amps on the market optimize circuit design and efficiency — both positive traits — Yamaha placed an even higher priority on sonic quality, so an off-the-shelf chip was not an option.

The MG01 op amps use redesigned circuits where internal components and wiring are perfectly matched. High-quality materials in their purest form — such as high-purity silicon wafers and copper wiring — were used so every single component contributes to outstanding resolution.

Switchable Phantom Power And PAD Switches

With switchable phantom power the MG consoles accept condenser microphones and all their advantages over dynamics — such as extended frequency response, higher dynamic range and better sonic quality. The input channels with PAD switches accept both mic and line-level sources. The PAD button attenuates high-level inputs, for example mic'd instruments during a concert that would otherwise cause clipping and seriously damage the mix.

One-Button Compressors

Compression plays a key role in almost every studio production or live sound setup. By cleverly controlling dynamics you can add more punch to basslines, tighten snares, bring vocals forward or thicken live guitar walls. But it can take countless hours to master even basic hardware compressors and use them to their full potential. Yamaha’s one-button compressors are an innovative in-house design that lets you optimally set the compressor with a single knob.

EQ And High-Pass Filters

Nothing beats a reliable equalizer when you want to shape sound with nuance. The MG series benefits from Yamaha’s unrivaled experience building audio gear. All mono channels include excellent 3-band EQs for precise tonal control. Additional high-pass filters let you remove unwanted handling noise and other low-frequency rumble, making the mix noticeably clearer and cleaner.

AUX / Effects Sends / Groups

The MG mixers include AUX sends to expand your PA or studio setup. You can route additional effects, send outputs to external recording devices or feed a monitoring system. The master sum has its own send controls. The MG06 / 06X and MG10 / 10XU models only feature a single stereo master bus. Other models include one or two stereo group buses and corresponding outputs for convenient channel grouping. Near the channel faders you'll find switches for clear group assignment.

Numerous Input And Output Connectors

All models feature high-quality, balanced Neutrik XLR connectors on the mono channels. The stereo channels also have XLR connectors. The mono inputs are implemented as combo jacks and accept both MIC and LINE levels. Two of the stereo inputs are equipped with an XLR connector and two jack connectors. The XLR accepts MIC-level signals while the two jack connectors are designed for LINE-level signals. You can feed either mono or stereo line signals (except on the 10-channel model). The behavior of the other two stereo channels varies by model: on the 20-channel model the XLR accepts MIC-level while two phono connectors accept mono or stereo LINE-level signals.

On the 16- and 12-channel models two jack connectors accept stereo LINE-level signals. Additionally, each stereo channel has 2TR phono jacks that serve as independent inputs for external sources such as CD players. The 10-channel model adds one stereo channel with a pair of jack sockets for LINE signals. On XU models any USB-input source can be assigned to one of the stereo channels. In addition to the main stereo outputs (XLR L/R, jack L/R), MG consoles offer numerous outputs for groups (jack format), AUX/FX (jack format), monitor (jack L/R) and headphones (stereo jack). The master outputs can be used for monitoring or mastering tasks.

Internal SPX Digital Effects

Effects add polish and professionalism to a mix in musical and non-musical applications alike. The MG-X/-XU models feature Yamaha’s world-renowned SPX multi-effect processor, delivering 24 editable, first-class digital effects that perfectly enhance a mix. You can add just the right sense of depth for a presentation or breathe fresh life into a live concert. The excellent reverb and delay can improve the mix’s sense of space in a realistic, natural way. The optional FC5 footswitch lets you toggle effects on and off (MG10XU / 12XU / 16XU / 20XU).

Metal Chassis

The MG series is built to last and features a robust, powder-coated metal chassis of outstanding build quality. The shape optimizes internal convection cooling while the power supply is cleanly separated from the analog circuits inside the unit, preventing noise and improving component lifespan. Forces like pressure or pull on the controls are absorbed by the sturdy chassis rather than directly stressing the PCB or electronic components, which further enhances the MG series’ reliability and longevity.

The highly efficient internal universal power supply lets you use the MG series anywhere in the world without worry — even where mains voltage fluctuates. Rack Mount Kit Included

The 16- and 20-channel MG models ship with rack ears so you can either place them on a table or mount them in a rack. This makes the consoles ideal for mobile use and fixed installations. The extremely robust yet handy construction allows stable placement and minimizes setup time. *Rack mount kit "RK-MG12" is available as an option for MG12 and MG12XU models.

USB Audio Interface With 2 Inputs And 2 Outputs At 24-Bit/192 kHz Resolution

The MG mixers feature digital connections so you can play back digital material directly through the console. USB supports not only PCs but also Apple devices such as iPhone and iPad (2 and newer) via Apple’s Lightning to USB Camera Adapter. The USB protocol uses asynchronous transfer; the MG console provides precise clocking so recordings and playback occur in excellent quality.

Comfortable Stereo Headphones

The KH-238 delivers a full, balanced sound with rich bass and clear highs. It provides substantial volume while maintaining precise stereo imaging. The softly padded, wide headband is length-adjustable — it offers 12 steps per side for optimal fit. For added comfort the earcups rotate on two axes. The thick, soft padding of the circumaural cups also provides good external noise isolation. The in-cable volume control is always at hand, making it convenient for PC or mp3 player use. The 3.5 mm stereo mini-jack plug offers excellent transmission and a 6.3 mm (1/4") stereo adapter is included.
