Yamaha MG Series: Live And Studio Ready!

For more than a century Yamaha has built on a legacy of outstanding craftsmanship and innovation that shows in all our products — from an unrivaled catalog of world-class musical instruments to professional audio gear built to touring standards. The MG series embodies that pursuit of excellent design and includes some of the same technologies developed for use in professional high-end consoles, including studio-grade preamps, powerful digital processing and a rugged, reliable construction.

With an intuitive, easy-to-use interface the MG series offers a wide range of compact mixers in models from six to twenty channels suited to many users and applications. The solid build and flexible design of these mixers let you shape your sound with confidence. They consistently deliver top performance and a level of sonic quality and reliability that’s unmatched in their class.

Master Of Its Class

Yamaha has always aimed to give customers the purest, most uncolored sound possible so the mixing engineer retains full creative freedom. While coloration can sometimes sound appealing, it steers the mix in a particular direction and limits the producer’s ability to shape the music. The MG series was designed firmly around Yamaha’s conviction that sound should above all be clear and transparent like a mountain stream. As a result these consoles deliver clarity in a way rarely heard in this class.

Master Of Its Class

The MG series includes models ranging from 6 to 20 channels for a variety of tasks. The intuitive user interface, robust construction, high sonic quality and flexible design of these reliable consoles are unrivaled in the compact class and make it straightforward to produce great mixes.

D-PRE (Discrete Class-A Microphone Preamps)

D-PRE (Discrete Class-A Microphone Preamps)

Preamps form the starting point for a great sound. If their quality is lacking, you won’t get a truly excellent mix no matter how hard the engineer tries. In other words: they set the course for the mix and already largely determine how good it can sound. MG consoles feature Yamaha’s studio-grade discrete Class-A preamps. They use an inverted Darlington circuit that, thanks to a dual-transistor cascade, delivers greater drive with lower impedance. D-PRE amps produce fat, naturally sounding bass and silky highs with very little tendency to distort.

Thanks to their wide, very balanced frequency response, the preamps handle any conceivable signal source without overemphasizing particular frequency ranges. This clean sonic foundation saves time and effort because heavy EQ moves or additional processing to correct the mix become unnecessary.

Operational Amplifiers For Top-Quality Sound

The preamp determines sonic quality, while the op-amp ICs are among the most important components of a preamp. The MG series uses newly developed, high-quality, custom MG01 op-amps that we developed in close cooperation with the semiconductor manufacturer. While many other op-amps optimize circuit design and efficiency — both positive features — Yamaha’s priority was sonic quality, so an off-the-shelf chip was not acceptable.

The MG01 op-amps incorporate redesigned circuits where internal components and wiring are perfectly matched. Naturally, high-grade materials in their purest form — such as wafers of ultra-pure silicon and copper wiring — were used so every single component of the chip contributes to outstanding resolution.

Switchable Phantom Power And PAD Switch

Switchable Phantom Power And PAD Switch

With switchable phantom power the MG consoles allow the connection of condenser microphones with all their advantages over dynamics — including extended frequency range, far greater dynamic capability and improved sound quality. Channels with a PAD switch accept both mic- and line-level sources. The PAD button attenuates high-level input signals, for example mic'd instruments on stage that would otherwise cause overloads and seriously damage the mix.

Yamaha Mixers. Your Sound.

Do you have a favorite song where the guitar needs no EQ and the vocals require no processing? Probably not. Yamaha mixers are known for linear reproduction and sonic purity, but even perfectly recorded instruments and vocals usually need a little extra to achieve a professional-sounding mix. Many tools originally developed for Yamaha’s high-end consoles are now available in the MG series. These consoles simply have everything you need to create a distinctive professional-quality sound.

One-Button Compressors

Compression plays a key role in nearly every studio production or live sound setup. By skillfully limiting the dynamics with a compressor you can give basslines more punch, tighten snares, bring vocals forward or thicken live guitar walls. But it can take countless hours to master the complexity of even simple hardware compressors and fully exploit them. Yamaha’s innovative one-button compressors let you optimally set the compressor with just a single knob.

EQ And High-Pass Filter

EQ And High-Pass Filter

There’s nothing better than a reliable equalizer when you need nuanced tone shaping. The MG series benefits from Yamaha’s unparalleled experience building audio gear. All mono channels feature excellent 3-band EQs for precise control over the sound. Additional high-pass filters remove unwanted handling noise and other low-frequency disturbances, making the mix noticeably clearer and cleaner.

AUX / Effect Sends / Groups

MG mixers provide AUX sends to expand a PA or studio setup. These let you route extra effects, send outputs to external recording devices or feed a monitoring system. The master sum also has its own send controls. The MG06 / 06X and MG10 / 10XU models have only a single stereo mix bus. Other models include one or two stereo group buses and corresponding outputs for comfortable channel grouping. Each channel has switches for clear group assignment next to the channel faders.

Numerous Input And Output Connections

Numerous Input And Output Connections

All models feature high-quality, balanced Neutrik XLR connectors on the mono channels. The stereo channels also include XLR sockets. The mono inputs are combo jacks that accept both MIC- and LINE-level signals. Two of the stereo inputs are equipped with an XLR connector plus two jack sockets. The XLR accepts mic-level signals while the two jack sockets are for line-level signals. You can feed either mono or stereo line signals (except on the 10-channel model). The wiring of the other two stereo channels varies by model: on the 20-channel model the XLR accepts mic-level while two phono connectors are provided for mono or stereo line-level signals.

On the 16- and 12-channel models, two jack connectors accept stereo line-level signals. Additionally, each stereo channel has 2TR phono jacks that serve as independent inputs for external sources such as CD players. The 10-channel model has an additional stereo channel with a pair of jack sockets for line signals. On XU models any source coming in via USB can be assigned to one of the stereo channels. In addition to the main stereo outputs (XLR L/R, jack L/R), MG consoles come with a range of output connectors for groups (jack format), AUX/FX (jack format), monitor (jack L/R) and headphones (stereo jack). The mix outputs can be used for monitoring or mastering tasks.

LED Level Meter

The MG series’ LED level meters let you read output levels quickly and precisely.

Internal SPX Digital Effects

Effects add polish and professionalism to any application, musical or otherwise. The MG-X/-XU models are equipped with Yamaha’s world-renowned SPX multi-effects processor, providing 24 editable premium digital effects ideal for enhancing a mix. You can add the right amount of depth to a lecture or give a live performance fresh energy. In particular, the excellent reverb and reliable delays can enhance the mix’s sense of space realistically and naturally. The FC5 footswitch (optional) lets you turn effects on and off (MG10XU / 12XU / 16XU / 20XU).

Built To Last

Built To Last

At concerts, recording sessions and even permanent installations your console can be exposed to many external influences and hazards. It might be very humid, the mains supply unstable, and life on the road places many stresses on gear that can lead to costly repairs and shorten component life. The newly developed MG series emphasizes durability so these mixers will deliver top performance for many years.

Metal Housing

Metal Housing

The MG series is built to last and features a solid, powder-coated metal housing of exceptional build quality. The shape optimizes internal convection cooling, while the power supply is neatly isolated from the analog circuitry inside the unit, which not only prevents unwanted noise but also prolongs component life. Forces like pressure or tension on control elements are absorbed by the sturdy housing instead of being transmitted directly to the PCB or electronic components as in many other mixers — a design that significantly improves the MG series’ reliability and longevity.

XLR Connector

The main stereo mix outputs use XLR connectors. These professional plugs lock in place so they can’t be accidentally pulled out and guarantee stable signal transmission even under the toughest conditions.

Classic Cantabile KH-238 Headphones

Comfortable Stereo Headphones

The KH-238 delivers a full, balanced sound with rich bass and clear highs. It provides plenty of volume yet maintains clean and precise localization in the stereo field. The softly padded, wide headband is height-adjustable. The extension offers 12 positions per side for an optimal fit. For extra comfort the earcups swivel on two axes. Thick, soft padding on the circumaural cups also provides good external noise isolation. The in-line volume control on the cable is always at hand, making it easy to use with a PC or MP3 player. The 3.5 mm stereo jack offers excellent transmission characteristics; a nickel-plated 6.3 mm stereo jack adapter is included.
