The handpan is an exceptionally beginner-friendly instrument where percussion and melody meet. Playing the handpan produces soothing, spherical, long-sustaining soundscapes that captivate both player and listeners. No prior experience or music-theory knowledge is required, because all tone fields on a handpan sit on a fixed scale. On most models it's not possible to strike dissonant, or 'wrong'-sounding, notes.

You can therefore follow your own intuition while playing and, after only a short time, lose yourself in mysterious, dreamlike melodies. With a bit of practice, more complex rhythms, compelling chords and two-voice melodies become possible. A handpan works equally well as a solo instrument or in ensemble with other handpans or instruments such as tongue drums, guitar or percussion.

Journey Handpan

The Journey Handpans are more compact, travel-friendly versions of the high-end Harmony Handpans. They are also made from quality stainless steel and are handcrafted and carefully tuned by some of the world’s best handpan builders. Stainless-steel handpans have a noticeably longer sustain than nitrided handpans, making them ideal for slow, relaxing and meditative playing. At the same time they are very low-maintenance. The Sela Journey Stainless Steel features a matte gold finish that gives it a refined, premium look.

Kurd Tuning

The D Kurd tuning (fundamental frequency 440 Hz) is one of our best-selling scales. The central note in the middle of the handpan is D3, with the notes A3, Bb3, C4, D4, E4, F4, G4 and A4 arranged in a circle around it. Thanks to its bright-sounding D minor scale, the D Kurd lets you play a huge variety of melodies — from calm and meditative to melancholic, up to powerful and joyful. Practical detail: the underside of the handpan has a lasered diagram of the scale with the individual tone fields.

Includes Bag

Each Sela handpan ships with a bag made from ripstop nylon fabric that, thanks to generous padding, provides excellent protection during transport. It can be carried by hand using the two handles or comfortably worn as a backpack using the adjustable shoulder straps. A practical outer pocket offers enough room for small accessories such as a metronome.
