The NU1XA features a complex and sophisticated upright piano mechanism that transfers the subtle movements of the keys to the hammer. It responds precisely to the finest nuances and expressive intentions of the player, including delicate playing techniques like trills and continuously repeated notes. Furthermore, the keyboard is made of wood like an acoustic piano, allowing for a solid, natural touch response.
Remarkably Detailed Expressiveness with the Yamaha Articulation Sensor System
The NU1XA is equipped with the newly developed Articulation Sensor System, which uses contactless electromagnetic sensors and Yamaha’s proprietary algorithm to precisely and continuously capture the finest nuances in the pianist’s playing. This system uses two separate sensors on each key: one for the hammer—the most important part of the acoustic piano sound mechanism—and another for the key itself, to accurately measure the release movement of the fingers and articulate the special nuances when the sound stops. Together, they fully capture the player’s finest expressions.
GrandTouch Pedals for an Even Greater Playing Range
The damper pedal of a grand piano responds with slightly different resistance to the player’s foot depending on when the pedal is pressed, when it begins to take effect, and when it is held down. Experienced players usually press the pedals while feeling these subtle resistance differences, adding their own fine variations to the tone and sound. When the pedal is released, the resistance changes differently than when pressing. The GrandTouch™ pedals feature a pivot structure similar to that of a grand piano. They provide the same expressive and familiar feel when pressing the pedal and expand the playing range.
Resonance That Fills the Performance Space Like a Grand Piano
The moment the hammer strikes the strings, the sound is immediately audible to the performer, and at the same time, the entire instrument vibrates and fills the room with magnificent sound. To faithfully reproduce this unique grand piano sound experience, the NU1XA features a new sound system. It includes upward-facing woofers that resonate the entire instrument and tweeters with a newly developed horn structure that resonate with the front and back of the instrument in the high frequencies. Together with these synergistic resonance effects, the sound quality and projection give the player precise real-time control over the sound while playing. The result is an amazingly realistic, grand piano-like sound that spreads three-dimensionally throughout the entire performance space.

With the NU1XA, you can play the voices of the CFX, Yamaha’s top concert grand piano and the first choice at competitions worldwide, and the warm tones of the Bösendorfer Imperial grand piano on a single instrument. The new samples give the player an even fuller sound than ever before.
More Than Just Sound
The richness of the NU1XA’s sound is not only based on great piano samples. It also uses unique technologies to deliver expressive power. The Grand Expression Modeling technology precisely simulates the complex interaction between player and instrument, reproducing the limitless tonal variety of a grand piano. Virtual Resonance Modeling (VRM) faithfully reproduces the extraordinarily complex resonances of a grand piano, caused by the resonance vibrations of the strings and soundboard.
Best Sound, Even with Headphones
By using special microphones positioned where the player sits during the recording of the piano samples, the binaural sampling technology effectively reproduces the feeling of hearing an acoustic piano in front of you while playing. This technology was used for both the Yamaha CFX and the Bösendorfer Imperial voices.

The NU1XA also features a beautiful and discreet touch panel that allows you to easily operate various basic instrument functions. When not in use, the panel automatically turns off and becomes visually invisible.
