The extremely durable piano hammers replicate the sensation pianists feel when hammers strike the strings, enabling precise tone control. Highly absorbent surfaces of the white keys made from synthetic ivory and black keys from synthetic ebony prevent slipping even during long performances and feel like those of a real grand piano.

The GrandTouch keyboard features wooden keys that reflect Yamaha's expertise with wood for pianos. Like grand piano keyboards, the solid wood is cut from the best parts of well-dried wood, making the keys more resistant to warping than laminated wood keyboards. The wooden texture and structure of the keys provide a grand piano-like playing feel.

The touch refers to the pianist's control not only over the intensity (soft/hard) when pressing and releasing the keys but also over the speed and depth with which the keys are pressed. The Grand Expression Modeling introduced in the CSP-200 series translates these diverse articulation possibilities of a pianist into the same limitless tonal variety of a grand piano.

This makes it possible to vary playing techniques by striking the keys at different depths and speeds, even when using trills or legato playing or emphasizing the melody against the accompaniment.

Yamaha CFX and Bösendorfer Imperial Sounds

The Clavinova grand piano sounds were recorded from several world-renowned concert grand pianos. One of them is the CFX, Yamaha's flagship concert grand. Pianists worldwide are captivated by the impressive, powerful, and expressive sound of the CFX in concert halls. Another sampled concert grand is the Imperial, the flagship model of Bösendorfer, a venerable Viennese piano brand with a devoted following.

The Imperial is known for its rich tonal colors and natural, warm playing feel. Yamaha faithfully reproduces the characteristics of these concert grands by carefully recording the entire tonal range of each of the 88 keys and making complex adjustments. This produces the most harmonious tones each instrument offers.

Binaural Sampling for Authentic Piano Sound, Even with Headphones

Binaural sampling is an advanced method where special microphones are placed on an artificial head at the same positions as the pianist's ears. This method captures piano sounds as they truly sound in reality.

We chose this technology to reproduce the atmosphere and complete natural resonance of acoustic pianos in Clavinova instruments. This gives pianists the feeling of sitting at a grand piano, even when playing with headphones. The experience is so pleasant that you forget you are wearing headphones, no matter how long you play.

For the CSP-200 series pianos, binaural sampling was used for both the Bösendorfer Imperial and the Yamaha CFX grand. Yamaha achieves binaural sound in the highest resolution with a specially developed artificial head with ears used for recording.

Additionally, Yamaha developed the "Stereophonic Optimizer" function to achieve the same effect as real grand pianos. The Stereophonic Optimizer technology replicates the natural spread of different piano voices over headphones—almost as good as the binaural sampling of the CFX and Imperial.
