Miraphone – brass instruments Made in Germany
Miraphone manufactures professional brass instruments in Germany and offers a particularly differentiated range in the low brass sector. At the centre are tubas in different sizes, pitches and valve configurations, complemented by euphoniums, tenor horns, baritones, trumpets and flugelhorns. The brand therefore covers a wide range of settings from community bands and concert bands to professional orchestras. When choosing an instrument, the most important factor is not one supposedly best model, but the combination of pitch, body size, valve system, bore and intended musical use.
Hagen – Bb tubas in different sizes
The Hagen family is one of Miraphone’s characteristic Bb tuba ranges. Models such as the Hagen 494, 495, 496 and 497 differ in aspects including overall size, bore and configuration. The family therefore extends from more compact instruments to large-format tubas for powerful low-register roles. At Kirstein, Hagen versions with rotary valves as well as larger models with four rotary valves are represented. In practice, choosing a tuba should take into account not only desired tonal volume, but also ergonomics, player size, ensemble setting and transport.
Firebird, Norwegian Star and Elektra for F and Eb tuba
Alongside large Bb instruments, Miraphone offers models in higher tuba pitches. The Firebird 281 and Elektra 481 belong to the F tuba range, while the Norwegian Star 283 is a distinctive Eb tuba. Instruments in these pitches often fulfil different musical roles from a large Bb or CC tuba and can be interesting for agile passages, solo repertoire or particular orchestral and ensemble requirements. The most suitable pitch depends strongly on musical environment, personal playing tradition and the intended role within the ensemble.
Bruckner, Siegfried and the 1291 to 1293 models
Within its large orchestral instruments, Miraphone also offers different construction concepts. The current programme includes models such as the Bruckner 291 and Siegfried 98 as well as the 1291, 1292 New Yorker and 1293 series. The 129x family includes instruments with front-action piston valves and therefore provides an alternative to traditional German rotary-valve designs. For players already accustomed to a particular valve system, this construction difference can be an important factor in playing feel and ergonomics.
M5000 and M5050 Ambassador – euphoniums for demanding players
With the M5000 and M5050 Ambassador, Miraphone is also represented in the professional euphonium sector. When comparing euphoniums, response is important, but valve layout, bore, instrument weight and personal playing feel also matter. Brass bands, concert bands, ensembles and solo applications can place different demands on flexibility, tonal shaping and register changes. For an instrument in this class, selection should therefore not be based on technical data alone, but should also consider the player’s mouthpiece, established technique and ensemble role.
Tenor horn, baritone, trumpet and flugelhorn
Miraphone is not limited to tuba and euphonium. The range also includes tenor horns and baritones as well as trumpets and flugelhorns. This makes the brand particularly broad for concert-band and traditional brass settings. Tenor horn and baritone models differ in aspects such as construction, valve configuration and musical function within the section, while trumpets and flugelhorns extend the programme into higher registers.
Which Miraphone tuba suits you?
For a professional tuba, the first decisions should be pitch and musical application. Bb tubas are especially common in German-speaking concert-band traditions, while CC, Eb and F instruments may serve different roles depending on orchestral practice, repertoire and solo demands. The next factors are body size and valve concept. A larger tuba is not automatically the better solution for every player: ergonomics, airflow requirements, agility and transportability are equally relevant. Players choosing between rotary valves and front-action piston valves should also take personal hand feel and previous playing experience into account.
