Heritage Musical Spoons has been making handcrafted musical spoons in Canada since 1997. Made from Canadian maple, these instruments combine traditional spoon percussion with a shape specifically designed for playing music. At Kirstein, you can find Heritage musical spoons in Small, Medium and Large sizes.

The three sizes mainly differ in pitch and playing feel, ranging from the higher-pitched Small model to the deep and powerful Large. This makes Heritage Spoons suitable for beginners and experienced percussionists alike, as well as for folk, acoustic music, rhythm exercises and creative percussion.

Heritage Musical Spoons at Kirstein

Heritage specialises in an unusual percussion instrument: handcrafted musical spoons made from Canadian maple. The brands story began in Quebec in 1997, when Richard Cyr made his first musical spoon. Today, the family business is run by Richard and his son Mathieu. Rather than developing a broad range of instruments, Heritage focuses on refining its Musical Spoons. The result is a purpose-built musical instrument with a connected design that makes controlled rhythmic playing easier.

At Kirstein, you can find Heritage musical spoons as part of our small percussion range. Their compact design makes the spoons easy to integrate into acoustic arrangements and percussion setups.

Small, Medium or Large – which Heritage musical spoon is right for you?

Heritage offers its musical spoons in three basic sizes. These sizes do not represent different quality levels: instead, the size primarily influences pitch, sound character and playing feel. This allows you to choose a model according to the sound and handling that best suit your intended use.

Heritage Small – compact with a higher pitch

The Heritage Musical Spoon Small produces the highest pitch of the three sizes. Heritage positions it as an entry-level size, and the model is also suitable for children aged three to six. Its compact format makes it an interesting choice for first experiences with spoon percussion and playful rhythm exercises.

Heritage Medium – the traditional middle ground

The Heritage Musical Spoon Medium is also known as “The Traditional”. It has a lower pitch than the Small model and is designed for adults as well as children aged six and above. If you are looking for a versatile introduction or a balanced musical spoon for different rhythms and playing techniques, the Medium is the middle option in the Heritage family.

Heritage Large – deeper sound and versatile playing techniques

The Heritage Musical Spoon Large, also known as “Boite-à-Bois”, is the largest version. Its deeper sound and resonance-oriented shape make it particularly interesting when a more powerful percussive character is required. The Large model supports different styles and techniques, making it suitable for players who want to explore a wider range of rhythmic possibilities with musical spoons.

Canadian maple and handcrafted production

Heritage uses selected Canadian maple from Quebec and Ontario. The dense wood is well suited to percussive instruments and creates a different sound character from loose metal spoons. The spoons are handcrafted in Canada. The production process includes shaping and sanding the wood, finishing the surface and carrying out a final inspection of the sound and finish.

Another characteristic feature is the connected construction. Inspired by traditional French musical spoons, it turns the two striking surfaces into a single instrument. This design enables controlled rhythmic movements and allows players to produce different sound variations.

Musical spoons as creative small percussion

Musical spoons can provide a rhythm, add accents or introduce an unusual timbre to an existing percussion arrangement. Heritage Spoons are therefore particularly well suited to folk and acoustic music, while also offering plenty of scope for free rhythm playing and learning percussive movement patterns. They are an accessible way to add a distinctive wooden percussion sound to a musical setup.
