The Exclusive Percussion Instrument for Your Jazz/Pop Ballads!
Chimes are a percussion instrument made up of a number of metal tone bars of different lengths (usually under 25 cm). These hang closely side by side from a carrier and are struck in one sweep with a beater or with the fingernails to produce an introductory sound effect from the highest to the lowest bar (or vice versa). The actual tone is created by the adjacent metal bars striking one another. They thus produce a descending sound similar to running a hand down the strings of a harp, but with a metallic timbre.
There are also chimes made of wood, bamboo, shells, or glass, which are named accordingly. In English, "chimes" sometimes also refers to tubular bells or the glockenspiel.
Chimes are mainly used in jazz and pop ballads.
