Chimes are a percussion instrument made up of a number of differently sized (mostly under 25 cm) metal sound rods. These hang closely side by side on a carrier and are struck in one sweep from the highest to the lowest rod (or vice versa) with a mallet or fingernails to create an "introductory" sound effect. The actual tone is produced by the rods striking each other. They create a descending sound similar to a harp, where you run your hand down the strings, but with a metallic timbre.
There are also chimes made of wood, bamboo, shells, or glass, which are named accordingly. In English, "chimes" sometimes also refers to tubular bells or glockenspiel.
Their main application is in jazz and pop ballads.
