5 Strings and Resonator

The BB-5 is a classic 5-string banjo, as used by most players. While open guitar tuners on the headstock do their job, there is a banjo tuner for the 5th string at the 5th fret. A special highlight in this price range is the resonator on the back. It directs the produced sound forward, resulting in a more projecting tone. Since this banjo has no tone ring, it generally does not develop very high volume – making it ideal for practicing at home.

Variable in Tone

The tension of the head and the resonator have a big influence on the instrument’s sound. Since the resonator can be removed and the head can be tuned with the included wrench, a wide range of tonal nuances can be achieved.

Tuning

The 5-string banjo is mainly used in bluegrass music to cover a variety of rhythmic and harmonic roles. It is mostly played in the so-called "Scruggs" style: the strings are plucked with thumb and middle finger. Fingerpicks can be used to increase volume if needed. Common 5-string banjo tunings are gDGCD (modal) and gCGCD (Double C), with open tuning gDGHD mostly used in bluegrass.
