The crank rods do what they are supposed to do. If you often have to set up the system on your own, it is an advantage if the tops can be cranked up instead of having to bring the spacer tubes to the appropriate height and then struggling to find the holes in the speakers.
This is really not a huge expense, so from my point of view it certainly makes sense!!!
