B&S MS 14 - Masterful Instrument with Icon Valve!

By combining red brass—commonly used in instrument making in the United States—and the popular nickel silver rim favored in German-speaking regions, the instrument makers crafted an extraordinary instrument with the "Stolzing" tenor trombone model from B&S's Meistersinger series.

All B&S "Meistersinger" trombones are handcrafted. The trombone slides with extended slide bells improve playability and stability in positions 5 through 7. The nickel silver rim is firmly soldered to the bell and measures 2.5 cm wide. The red brass bell delivers a warm yet very focused tone.

The F attachment features a German-made cylinder valve with the proven 3B joint system. The asymmetrical bends on the main slide and the F valve ensure especially easy and quick response.

The Revolutionary Icon Valve

The Icon Valve is a significantly improved, newly designed lightweight cylinder valve. It is compactly engineered, and its airflow passage of over 98 percent barely disrupts the air stream.

The Icon Valve is highly responsive and offers a very pleasant playing feel thanks to its reduced, balanced resistance. The trombonist gains more expressive possibilities and a fuller sound with less blowing resistance.

It is installed simply and very accessibly. Maintenance and repairs remain largely unchanged. The valve is easy to remove, clean, and reinsert just as effortlessly as a standard valve. No new tools or special handling are required.

Background of the "Stolzing" Model from the Meistersinger Series

The namesake "Stolzing" is one of the main characters from Richard Wagner's opera "The Mastersingers of Nuremberg," which trombonist Prof. Carl Lenthe often performed during his time at the Munich State Opera. In the opera’s story, the young knight Walther von Stolzing competes in the Nuremberg singing contest to win the beautiful Eva for himself.

Eva, the daughter of a goldsmith, falls in love at first sight with the young tenor "Stolzing." In the contest, his outstanding singing skill ultimately convinces the judges, earning him not only admission to the Mastersingers guild but also the hand of his beloved Eva.

Carl Lenthe is Professor of Music (Trombone) at Indiana University Bloomington (Jacobs School of Music) and co-developed the "Stolzing" model by combining characteristics of American and European brass instrument making.
