Originally, Portuguese immigrant João Fernandes brought the Braguinha, a local form of the Cavaquinho, from Madeira to Hawaii in 1879. There it was named "Ukulele" ("jumping flea"), reflecting the Hawaiians’ impression of the fingers quickly moving across the instrument’s fingerboard. From Hawaii, the ukulele then traveled through America to Europe and also found great popularity in the music scene here.
