Arturia MicroFreak - Experimental Hybrid Synth!
Unusual, different, unique, quirky, extraordinary. Take all these words and concepts and you’re still nowhere near MicroFreak, Arturia’s new affordable hardware synth. A powerful digital oscillator with many atypical modes, an analog filter, and a modulation matrix.
It may look innocent, but it’s complex. MicroFreak is an extremely versatile little monster that can sound sweet, grand, hypnotic, deep, chaotic, and authentic. It features an expressive touch keyboard that also adds to its stylish appearance.
Oscillator Modes
The digital oscillator can do things other synthesizers simply can’t. With modes like “Texturer,” “KarplusStrong,” “Harmonic OSC,” and “Superwave,” adventurous musicians can explore completely new possibilities. Arturia complements the palette with some open source models of the Plaits oscillator from the renowned Eurorack maker Mutable Instruments. MicroFreak also offers room for future expansions.
Touch Keyboard with Aftertouch
Try something new and unusual. The MicroFreak’s touch keyboard is fast, natural, and expressive. It senses pressure and offers polyphonic aftertouch!
Analog Multimode Filter
Opposites attract, so we paired our digital oscillator with an analog filter. Inspired by the groundbreaking 12dB SEM filter from Oberheim, you can make it scream and whisper. This filter can even self-oscillate!
Arpeggiator and Step Sequencer
Record up to four automations, edit notes per step, or use the innovative random function. The MicroFreak’s step sequencer and arpeggiator are powerful and fun.
Modulation Matrix
Control the circuitry with MicroFreak’s 5x7 matrix. Three targets are user-assignable.
The Rear Panel
CV / Gate: Pitch Out, Gate Out, and Pressure Out, Clock In and Out, MIDI In and Out, and USB.
OLED Display
All necessary information on a high-resolution OLED display. A first for an Arturia product.

Even though there are only two octaves on the unit itself, the keyboard is so much fun that I do most of my playing with the built-in keys. Aftertouch also reacts pleasantly to the size of the finger surface on which it rests, resulting in a very unique way of playing. Would be desirable at most aftertouch and velocity at the same time instead of either-or, but it's fun even so.
