Martin Guitar DSS-16E 1935 Burst

Martin DSS-16E - Powerful Sloped-Shoulder Dreadnought With Short Scale!

The Martin DSS-16E blends the big-bodied character of a sloped-shoulder dreadnought with an unusually short 24.9-inch scale. That combination delivers a powerful, woody response with a relaxed playing feel and targets players who want a full acoustic sound with controlled low end and direct responsiveness.

Spruce Top and Solid Mahogany Body

For the top Martin uses spruce, while the back and sides are crafted from solid mahogany. This wood pairing supports a present midrange, clear highs and a focused bass foundation. Especially in rhythmic playing the DSS-16E sits cleanly in an arrangement without the large dreadnought body losing its presence. The sloped-shoulder design further contributes a characteristically warm, woody core tone.

Forward-Shifted X-Bracing for Resonance and Dynamics

Beneath the top sits a forward-shifted, scalloped X-bracing. This construction promotes free vibration of the top and is designed for a resonant, dynamic response with pronounced bass. The combination of the large body and this bracing ensures chords are as convincing as open accompaniments and expressive rhythm work.

Short Scale and Comfortable Modified Low Oval Profile

A standout feature of this DSS-16E is the 24.9-inch scale. Compared with a longer standard scale it reduces perceived string tension and delivers a more relaxed playing feel. The neck is made from selected hardwood with a Modified Low Oval profile and is paired with an ebony fretboard. A 44.45 mm nut width provides ample room for clean chord work and controlled fingerstyle. The 1955 Style 18 fretboard inlays capture classic Martin aesthetics without overloading the instrument's restrained character.

Ready for Stage and Recording

Equipped with the L.R. Baggs Element, the guitar is already set up for amplified use. The system sends the signal directly to amps, PA or recording gear, expanding its live and studio applications. An ebony bridge, a bone saddle and open nickel tuners complement the traditional build. The DSS-16E ships with Martin Era Treated Legacy Medium strings. A matching softshell case is also included for secure transport.
