A High-Gain Icon as an Innovative Waza Evolution!

For over 25 years, the MT-2 Metal Zone has been one of BOSS’s most popular and influential compact pedals, with sales only surpassed by the legendary DS-1 Distortion. Made in Japan following Waza Craft tradition, the MT-2W elevates this iconic stompbox with its tonal variety and incredible versatility. The Standard mode offers an evolution of the original mid-focused Metal Zone sound. The Custom mode adds a fresh, broad sonic character perfectly suited for modern high-gain styles.

The Metal Zone: A Milestone Among High-Gain Pedals

Since its release in 1991, the MT-2 Metal Zone has been continuously produced and is cherished by guitarists worldwide for its dense, powerful distortion and unmistakable mid-centric tonal character. The innovative two-stage circuit design of the MT-2 enables a wide range of heavy sounds and has influenced countless pedal developers over the years. Other standout features include the groundbreaking 3-band EQ with parametric mids, offering deep tone-shaping capabilities for diverse high-gain styles. Additionally, the MT-2 was one of the first BOSS compact pedals to feature dual concentric knobs for expanded control without increasing footprint.

MT-2W: Waza Craftsmanship for Optimized Sounds

Like all Waza Craft pedals, the MT-2W combines original BOSS analog circuitry with refined enhancements for optimized performance and versatility. The two-stage gain circuit is built discretely using carefully selected components. The result: premium sounds with enhanced clarity. The EQ has also been redesigned, now featuring a more balanced midrange and unique Q values specifically tailored for the pedal’s Standard and Custom modes.

Standard Mode: An Even Better Metal Zone

Thanks to the discrete components in the two-stage MT-2W gain circuit, the Standard mode elevates the famous midrange sound of the original Metal Zone to a new level. Along with improved attack response, the tones also offer increased precision and transparency. Noise has been reduced to enable optimized performance even in ultra-high-gain settings.

Custom Mode: Wide and Defined

In Custom mode, the MT-2W delivers an impressively large and versatile sound that fits perfectly into almost any modern heavy style. The core tone is natural and open, with even more dynamic range and rounded low mids compared to Standard mode. The bass remains precise and defined even at extreme gain settings—ideal for riff work on down-tuned guitars. Additionally, the sound clears up beautifully when rolling back the guitar volume, giving you a highly balanced tonal palette right at your fingertips.

Waza Craft: The Art of Superior Tone

From the start, BOSS developers aimed to create the best guitar tones using everything from analog vintage circuits to high-tech DSP processing. The Waza Craft series embodies this passion, offering exceptional tonal and playing qualities based on carefully selected analog components, optimized circuits, and meticulous attention to detail. The Japanese word "Waza" means "art and technique"—a fitting symbol for these special edition pedals as the pinnacle of modern BOSS development and craftsmanship.

First to the purchase and delivery:
Everything went flawlessly and quickly. No complaints. Note very good!

About the Metalzone MT-2w:
Somehow I always had the feeling with the original Metalzone that the pedal was a gag from Boss. Then I got the idea to use it as a preamp and played it directly into the power amp. The sun really rises. Unbelievable. Then there was the Waza version. You don't need it, I thought. I thought wrong.
The Custom Mode makes the Metal Zone a 2 in 1 pedal. I didn't expect that much.

Clean gehat there nothing. That's not what it's made for. But (Hard-)Rock and Metal runs! And that really well.
In custom mode, the bass and low mid range is much tighter and cleaner. For that alone it is worth it. With it the Metal Zone asserts itself in the band context really well.

The device does what it's supposed to do: Distort.

The level control adjusts the volume between clean and distorted, which is useful.

The sounds can be adjusted via the two middle controls ("Equaliser"). The presets suggested in the manual for certain sounds (e.g. Rock 1, Rock 2, Overdrive etc.) are not very helpful in my personal opinion. You have to try it out yourself.

As expected, the Distortion control adjusts the amount of distortion.

The design of the device is robust.

There is nothing to complain about the handling by Kirstein.
