The Podcast App
The PODCAST app lets you easily create high-quality productions. Thanks to special sound pads, you can trigger sound effects, start background music, and much more via the touchscreen. Choose from 13 premium sounds or use your own content from the SD card. (The Podcast app supports up to four microphones and two sound pad channels.)
The Music App
The MUSIC app gives you direct access to all essential functions like audio levels, faders, level meters, and more. With 10 inputs and 12 recording tracks, even larger ensembles can be recorded with ease. Create mixes and overdubs, and edit your recordings with EQ and compressor. Connect your recorder via USB to our Zoom Guitar Lab software and access a vast selection of amps and effects.
The Field App
The FIELD app is the perfect solution for field recordings, sound design, conferences, and much more. It offers direct access to large-format level meters for each track, ensuring your recordings never clip. You can also quickly adjust input type, high-pass filter, compressor, limiter, noise gate, and other key settings.
The Microphone Capsules
The H8 comes with the MS Pack – that is, the XYH-6 and MSH-6 microphones in silver.
Zoom XYH-6 X/Y Capsule
The XYH-6 capsule, known from the H6, is now also available separately, greatly expanding the capabilities of your H5 recorder. The XYH-6 X/Y capsule adds two matched high-quality, unidirectional microphones to the Zoom H5. This microphone type is especially sensitive to sounds coming from the front, less so to sounds from the sides or rear. Technically, this is called a cardioid polar pattern.
These microphones feature the largest diaphragm size (14.6 mm) ever available in a portable recorder. Stereo X/Y recordings played back in mono result in a fuller sound than you would get with a single microphone. If mono compatibility is important to you (for example, for TV productions), the mid-side M/S recording technique might be the better choice.
Zoom MSH-6 MS Capsule
The MSH-6 capsule, also known from the H6, is now available separately, greatly expanding the capabilities of your H5 recorder. Although the MSH-6 MS capsule looks like a single microphone, it contains two microphones placed directly on top of each other. One microphone in the MSH-6 operates unidirectionally (most sensitive to front-facing sound, less to side and rear sound), while the other operates bidirectionally (this type is sensitive to front and rear sound, less to side sound). Inside the H6 MS capsule, the unidirectional "mid" microphone faces forward, while the bidirectional "side" microphone is rotated 90 degrees to it.
The concept behind M/S recordings is that the mid microphone captures signals in the center, while the side microphone creates spatiality and directionality by adding or subtracting side information (both sides). The M/S recording technique is recommended if you want a variable amount of room ambience in your recording. The technique suits studio recordings and is highly recommended for rehearsal and live recordings due to its flexibility.

The Zoom Capsule System 2.0 allows connection of up to four additional audio channels via the H8 capsule port to expand your recording options.
XAH-8 - Combined XY / AB Microphone
The XAH-8 capsule enables crystal-clear stereo recordings. The capsules can be easily adjusted to switch between a compact XY arrangement and an AB setup with extended stereo width.
VRH-8 Ambisonic Microphone
The VRH-8 is an Ambisonic microphone capsule containing four condenser microphones for immersive 360° audio recordings. An internal accelerometer ensures the capsule is always correctly oriented, while the built-in Ambisonic decoder automatically performs the necessary conversions, saving time in post-production.
EXH-8 Expansion Capsule
The EXH-8 capsule offers four additional XLR inputs for a total of 10 connection options. Each additional input has its own gain control and pad switch. You can even use your preferred condenser microphones—just connect a power supply to the EXH-8 capsule to provide phantom power.
Remote Control
You can monitor level meters and independently trigger REC, PLAY, and STOP regardless of the H8 application mode. Just insert a BTA-1 into your H8 and connect to your iOS device. (*BTA-1 sold separately.)
Inputs and Outputs
The H8 offers four XLR inputs with dedicated pad switches and gain controls. Two additional XLR/TRS combo jacks with Hi-Z switches allow recording line signals, microphones, or direct connection of electric guitars and basses.
Use the built-in 3.5 mm headphone output for monitoring or feed the audio signal directly into your camera via the separate stereo line output.
Multichannel Audio Interface
The H8 is a powerful USB audio interface. Connect it via USB to your PC, Mac, iPad, or tablet and use up to twelve recording channels simultaneously.
Recording Time and File Formats
With just four AA batteries, you get up to 20 hours of recording time. For unlimited recording time, use the (optional) AD-17 power adapter.
The H8 creates BWF-compatible WAV and MP3 files in the following formats:

Podcasting
WaveLab Cast connects you directly to podcast directories like Spreaker or Podbean*. You can quickly upload episodes and create and publish RSS feeds directly.
Audio for Video
Import your video file and WaveLab Cast automatically extracts the audio. Use editing tools to reduce unwanted noise, adjust levels, and remove harsh sibilance. With metering options, you can create new tracks, fade in your music, and apply EQ and compression. WaveLab Cast’s export functions let you reattach the audio track to the video file.
Field Recording
WaveLab Cast supports audio quality up to 96 kHz and includes a high-end resampler. RestoreRig removes noise and unwanted sounds. With snap functions and crossfade options, you can compile new files. When finished, export your sound files in any common audio format.
