Shure BETA 91A - Boundary Microphone for Bass Drum or Piano/Choir!
The Beta 91A is a boundary microphone for capturing bass drum and other low-frequency instruments as well as grand piano. The condenser capsule and the preamp integrated into the housing deliver an excellent response with powerful, tight low end. A switch lets you adjust the frequency response to avoid boominess.
How Does the Beta 91A Sound?
The boundary Beta 91A combines the sonic character of the classic SM91 — which was especially used for miking grand piano and piano — with the fat punch of the Beta 91 — popular on bass drum and other low-frequency instruments.
This successful combination produces a cardioid microphone with low self-noise that can handle extremely high sound pressure levels without problem. A switchable filter attenuates the lower mids to prevent bass drum boom.
What's the Advantage of a Boundary Microphone?
The biggest advantage of a boundary mic is quick, straightforward positioning. The microphone is simply placed inside the bass drum without additional mounting hardware — no stands get in the way.
Tip: Beta 91A in Combination with the Beta 52A
Sound engineers often use the Beta 91A together with the Beta 52A. Place the Beta 91A inside the drum (for maximum attack) and the Beta 52A outside the bass drum (for maximum punch).
Also Suitable for Piano and Grand Piano
It is also common to use a boundary mic for miking an upright or grand piano. The microphone is attached to the inside of the lid.
What's the Difference Compared to the Predecessor Beta 91?
The Beta 91A has the preamp integrated into the housing — which simplifies setup. It also delivers a sound reminiscent of the SM91 and features a switch to reduce the lower mids.
