When the ML-1 hit the market years ago, emulating the tonal character of over 25 hand-selected vintage microphones was a milestone for many users. The new ML-1A and the newly developed Virtual Microphone System plug-in now arrive with optimized hardware and additional key features.
The new ML-1A large-diaphragm condenser microphone is ideal for recording vocals, live instruments, drum kits and nearly every other application. It sports a slimmer, dark-gray housing with a redesigned grille and an optimized capsule. Beyond the aesthetic updates, the most important new feature of the ML-1A is the new three-stage pad switch with 0 dB / -10 dB / -20 dB. With the -20 dB pad engaged you can capture up to 145 dB SPL. The ML-1A also offers lower self-noise for pristine recordings.
Usability of the virtual microphone models has also been significantly improved, since all microphone models are now housed in a standalone plug-in. The new VMS plug-in delivers numerous new functions. The "Microphone Model Morphing" lets you crossfade between two microphone models, the "Proximity" control simulates the natural bass lift from close placement to the source, and the "Mono-to-Stereo-Widening" creates a sense of widening for voices in the stereo field, which, for example, enhances the contrast of backing vocals.
And as if that weren’t enough, the ML-1A ships with the brand-new "Radio France Signature" microphone pack. To celebrate the company’s French roots, the ten best-known microphones from the legendary Radio France headquarters were recreated. From studio microphones to an "indestructible" microphone to the largest ribbon microphone ever made — the microphones in this pack are unique designs that make (not only) the human voice sound magnificent.
