Rega RB78 Mono MM Cartridge System

Rega RB78 for Authentic 78 rpm Playback!

The Rega RB78 is a dedicated moving-magnet cartridge for playback of 78 rpm records. The mono MM system developed specifically for this purpose combines a clearly defined application with Rega's proven construction. With a recommended tracking force of 1.75 g, internally series-wired coils and its design for the Rega Planar 78, the RB78 is a consistent solution for enthusiasts of historic 78-rpm recordings and classic shellac records.

Specifically for 78 rpm Records

The RB78 was not designed as a universal stereo cartridge but intentionally developed for playback of 78 rpm records. It targets collectors and music lovers who want to reproduce historic recordings on a dedicated turntable. The clear specialization makes the RB78 particularly interesting for a dedicated 78-rpm setup and avoids unnecessary features that are not required for this application.

Moving-Magnet Technology in Mono Configuration

As a moving-magnet system, or MM cartridge, the Rega RB78 uses a proven cartridge technology. The design is optimized for mono playback. Rega wires the RB78's coils internally in series, so the electrical construction is consistently tuned to the cartridge's intended mono operation. For users seeking a cartridge specifically for historic mono records and 78-rpm discs, the RB78 offers a technically well-defined solution.

Defined Tracking Force of 1.75 g

Rega recommends a tracking force of 1.75 g for the RB78. This specific manufacturer value allows precise tonearm adjustment and ensures a reproducible turntable configuration. Correct tracking force setting is an essential part of careful cartridge installation and should be taken into account when setting up the system.

Ideal Complement for the Rega Planar 78

The RB78 is the matching cartridge solution for the Rega Planar 78, a turntable designed specifically for 78 rpm. The Planar 78 uses the Rega RB220 tonearm and is explicitly intended to be combined with the separately available RB78. When mounted on the Planar 78, the mounting nuts are positioned above the headshell, creating a Rega system consistently tuned to playback of classic 78-rpm records.
