Replaceable Drum Head for Your Iconic Cajón!
This West African country is a center of music and the home of the world-renowned "Les Ballets Africains", which over the past three quarters of a century has presented some of Africa's finest drummers. Central to Guinean music is the djembe, which can be made from cowhide or goatskin.
The Guinean íon is a tribute to the latter and produces a rounder tone than a bleached goatskin íon (like the Cuban). Because it is generally thicker than bleached goatskin, it can be played much more forcefully and is recommended both for its unique frequency response and its robustness.
Installation is simple: using the Allen key that comes with the Iconic Cajón (usually found at the sound hole on the lower edge), loosen the 8 screws and insert the íon accordingly. Then retighten the screws.
You can influence the head tension—and thus the sound—by adjusting the screw tension. Depending on how tight the screws are, the pitch of the íon changes. Try a quarter to half turn per screw and listen to how the tone changes until you find a sound you like. Make sure, however, that the íon is not too loose.
