EVH and BOSS present the SDE-3000EVH Dual Digital Delay, an authentic recreation of the stereo delay that shaped Eddie Van Halen's live sound and his massive 3-cabinet setup. The powerful SDE-3000EVH is based on the Roland SDE-3000 vintage rack delay and combines two SDE-3000 units into one pedal, expanded with versatile connections for building a wet/dry/wet rig - just like Eddie. Additionally, you get eight EVH presets directly sourced from his delay units. This lets you bring the master’s expansive delay sound into your own setup.

Equally legendary is Eddie’s breathtaking sound, which he refined throughout his career with ever-new amps and effects.
Eddie Van Halen and the SDE-3000
The Roland SDE-3000 delays were perfect for his unique wet/dry/wet live rig approach, producing a full, high-quality sound with special delay parameters that allowed him to tailor the tone exactly to his preferences.
After many years with the SDE-3000, Eddie—tireless and experimental—searched again for other delays to further optimize his sound. But he found no delay that could match the SDE-3000, and trusted the two units in his stage rig until the end of his long career.
The SDE-3000EVH - A Collaboration Between EVH and BOSS
EVH carries on Eddie’s legacy, sharing his visionary guitar equipment concepts with musicians worldwide. Several years ago, EVH and BOSS developed the idea to make the legendary guitarist’s unique approach with the vintage SDE-3000 delays accessible to all players.
In close collaboration, EVH and BOSS developed the SDE-3000EVH to authentically reproduce Eddie Van Halen’s delay sound in every detail. For this purpose, we supplied the EVH team with numerous test units to compare with the guitarist’s settings and sounds in his famous 5150 recording studio. After extensive testing and feedback rounds, we are excited to present the final product of this intensive process: a delay with exact sonic recreations of Eddie’s presets, adorned with the characteristic EVH stripes.
Recreating Eddie Van Halen’s Delay Setup
The original SDE-3000 was a mono delay. Eddie used two units with separate settings to create his distinctive sound. The SDE-3000EVH combines two SDE-3000s in one pedal and includes a preset bank that lets you recall all settings for both delays at the push of a button.
Simple Wet/Dry/Wet Setup
In the early 1990s, Eddie developed his extraordinary wet/dry/wet setup with three speaker cabinets. While the dry signal is routed through the center cabinet, the left and right cabinets are fed only with wet delay effects to create a wide, spacious soundscape. Thanks to numerous outputs and flexible routing modes, you can recreate this setup with an SDE-3000EVH and your own amps.
EVH Presets at the Push of a Button
The SDE-3000EVH offers eight EVH presets selectable via a dedicated switch. The first four presets were designed for wet/dry/wet setups and match the presets Eddie used in his live rig. The remaining four presets provide the same sounds adapted for use with a conventional stereo amplifier.
The Rebirth of a Vintage Delay
Unlike the clear, precise sound of most digital delays from the 1980s, the SDE-3000 stood out with its warm, musical tone. This was based on a sophisticated and complex digital signal processing combined with the nonlinear behavior of the supporting analog circuit. This included the varying frequency response of the preamp depending on input level, magnetic saturation of the anti-alias filter, and modulation changes through time components. In developing the SDE-3000EVH, BOSS thoroughly analyzed all these factors to preserve the special character of this venerable classic in the modern era.
Authentic Details, Modern Enhancements
The SDE-3000EVH provides nearly all parameters of the SDE-3000 on a retro control surface derived from the original vintage hardware. Like the original, the two selectable delay ranges feature different frequency characteristics. The distinctive modulation circuit has also been faithfully recreated. In addition to the usual depth and rate controls, the phase of the original delay and the feedback loop can be switched separately to influence the modulation effect. Furthermore, 92 user memory slots, a carryover function, and more are available.
Two SDE-3000s in One Pedal
The SDE-3000EVH offers two independent delays with separate parameters and selectable mono or stereo modulation for each delay. Users can run both delays in parallel and pan them to create dynamic stereo panoramas. In serial mode, complex rhythms and reverb-like depth effects emerge. In addition to the EVH wet/dry/wet configuration, the flexible inputs and outputs allow a variety of mono and stereo setups. You can integrate external pedals via the loop connections or connect the SDE-3000EVH to an amp’s effects loop using the 4-cable method, including selectable impedance for optimal sound.
Modern Performance in a Compact Format
With its pedal-based design and expanded control options, the SDE-3000EVH is far more flexible than its rack predecessor. Through the three footswitches, users can select memory slots, control functions like tap tempo and delay hold, temporarily activate effects, and more. The two control inputs allow connection of up to four footswitches, two expression pedals, or a GA-FC/GA-FC EX. A MIDI I/O is also available for external control. The wide range of assignable targets enables comprehensive real-time control that goes far beyond the capabilities of the original SDE-3000.
