With the RE-2, BOSS transfers the sound and effect behavior of the original Space Echo for the first time into the famous compact pedal series. Based on intensive development work and new technological innovations, the RE-2 delivers the coveted magic of the RE-201 in a compact pedalboard format—faithfully recreated down to the last detail by the creators of the original.

RE-201 Space Echo: Simply Legendary

The RE-201 was one of the leading tape echoes of its time. With its three playback heads arranged at equal distances and an integrated spring reverb tank, the Space Echo could produce almost any echo sound—from simple, clean delays to dense, rhythmic echo and ambient wash effects.

The legendary sound of the RE-201 was influenced by numerous factors, including the warm compression of magnetic tape saturation, dynamic modulation caused by fluctuating motor speed, friction, and other elements. The final crucial ingredient for the tonal variety of the Space Echo was the analog preamp circuit.

The Rebirth of a Masterpiece

With the RE-2 and its big brother—the RE-202—the BOSS developers captured the complex, nonlinear behavior of the RE-201, which directly contributed to its legendary status, in every detail. Several vintage units were analyzed, including a flawless original from the BOSS and Roland factory archives.

All factors influencing the sound were meticulously studied and recreated with entirely new algorithms—including tape transport, recording/playback mechanism, motor speed variations, preamp coloration, spring reverb character, and much more.

Journey Into the Depths of Space

The RE-2 combines the grand sonic character of the RE-201 in the classic BOSS compact pedal format. Using the eleven-step mode selector, you can choose the different virtual playback heads with or without spring reverb. Additionally, the balance between echo and reverb can be adjusted via separate level controls.

Every behavior is recreated with the highest fidelity, such as the gradual pitch change through adjustments of the repeat rate or the uncontrolled feedback when the intensity knob is turned up fully. Moreover, the Wow & Flutter control allows you to generate all the natural modulations essential for the original Space Echo sound.

Designed for Modern Musicians

The RE-2 expands the classic Space Echo experience with new and flexible features for modern musicians. The delay time has been doubled and complemented by a tap tempo input. The twist function also enables expressive special effects during performance.

For the dry sound, you can choose between the warm and rich preamp of the RE-201 or a clean signal without any processing. Besides true stereo inputs and outputs, the dry signal can even be completely muted to create parallel effect setups or to use the effect signal in studio productions.

Furthermore, the RE-2 supports the use of external footswitches or an expression pedal—including seamless, parallel control of multiple functions.
