I also have a smaller A-bass with a scale length of (unfortunately) not quite 60 cm, and let me say this up front: that one (a Harley Benton) feels significantly higher quality (if it weren’t for the super-short scale length—I wouldn’t have been looking for anything new!).
So at first glance (and possibly even at second glance), the Cantabile seems “cheaper” (which it was). Maybe this is also accentuated by the high-gloss finish, which somehow reminds me of “plastic”...
When I first played it, the loud buzzing noises bothered me, so I adjusted the truss rod a little—just a tiny bit—and it was immediately much better.
Testing it through the amp was a very pleasant surprise: all the strings sounded equally loud and clear. I’ve had different experiences in the past…
Two days later, I put on flatwound strings (PYRAMID GOLD, a replacement set from my Ibanez TMB 30, which, luckily, fit perfectly) and tested it again through the amp.
Wow! A great sound, and absolutely no “slipping noises.”
Bottom line: I’m very happy with my purchase. I do notice that I have to fret a bit more precisely here than on my other basses, but that can also be a challenge. And it goes without saying that an instrument in this price range is bound to have a few minor cosmetic flaws. As long as it plays so well and the sound is right!
