The Beginner Level introduces students to the fundamentals of piano playing. Step by step, they learn first tones and note values initially without the staff. Duet accompaniments for the teacher make playing interesting and varied. By the end of the book, students have learned many treble and bass clef notes in the five-finger position, the grand staff, various time signatures, note and rest values, first chords, sharp and flat signs, legato, staccato, and much more.

The piano course is the main book of the Bastien Basic Piano Courses. The carefully graded, logical learning sections ensure steady, uninterrupted progress. The interesting selection of pieces includes pop, classical, well-known songs, and contemporary music—lovingly arranged by the Bastiens. Students are gradually introduced to all 12 keys and learn all essential basics for successful piano playing.
