Lechgold enables you this emotional and extraordinary experience at an unbeatable price-performance ratio. The three-piece Lechgold alphorn consists of hand, middle, and bell tubes. The "Top Class" model places special emphasis on easy playability, full sound, and tonal variety.

The alphorn body is made of spruce wood. It is wrapped with durable rattan, which is resistant to external influences such as shocks and impacts and naturally increases the instrument's basic stability. The mouthpiece knob and bell ring are made of solid walnut wood and perfectly high-gloss lacquered.

The extremely easy response and full sound mainly result from the wide bore and the bell diameter of 250 mm, which allows you a unique playing experience. The consistent wall thickness of 8.5 mm also contributes to the well-deserved designation "Top Class."

The "Top Class" alphorn is tuned to 442 Hz; tuning to 440 Hz is easily possible by slightly pulling it apart.

Gold-Anodized & Absolutely Airtight Connection Sleeves

The tube connection sleeves are gold-anodized and therefore extremely abrasion-resistant.

Stability, perfect fit, and absolute airtightness are ensured by 3 rubber sealing rings each at the connection sleeves between hand and middle tubes as well as between middle and bell tubes. Experience shows that this is the highest quality connection technique and has proven itself with Lechgold alphorns.

The Mouthpiece

Lechgold supplies a standard maple mouthpiece with a 19 mm inner bell diameter and a 5.5 mm bore. These are dipped in linseed oil and lacquered multiple times.

The conical mouthpiece of an alphorn resembles in shape and tone color that of a French horn. Besides the shape, the wood of the mouthpiece also influences the hardness of the tones.

Lechgold alphorns are handcrafted from Austrian woods from higher Alpine regions. It is important that the tree grew slowly, so the annual rings are close together. This allows improved vibration. The wood is slowly dried over several years to avoid tension and warping.

The Natural Harmonic Series of the Alphorn

Unlike keyboard and plucked instruments, alphorns produce only tones of the natural harmonic series. This series consists of tones whose frequencies are integer multiples of the fundamental tone (e.g., F horn = 43.654 Hz). Depending on the instrument's tuning, this natural harmonic series covers 12 to 16 different tones.

Conveniently, the natural tones are the same as those of conventional wind instruments. Thus, the natural harmonic series of an F alphorn corresponds to that of an F tuba or an F French horn. The series of Bb-tuned instruments corresponds to that of a Bb trombone. Switching to an alphorn is therefore easy if you already master a "normal" wind instrument.
