B&S MS 14 - A Masterful Instrument!
By combining red brass—widely used in instrument making in the United States—and the popular nickel silver rim in German-speaking countries, the instrument makers created an extraordinary instrument with the "Stolzing" quart trombone model from B&S's Meistersinger series.
All B&S "Meistersinger" trombones are handcrafted. The trombone slides with extended slide bells enhance playability and stability in positions 5 to 7. The nickel silver rim is firmly soldered to the bell and is 2.5 cm wide. The red brass bell delivers a warm yet very focused sound.
The F extension is equipped with a German-made cylinder valve and the proven 3B joint system. The asymmetrical bends on the main slide and the quart valve are key to an especially easy and quick response.
Background of the "Stolzing" Model from the Meistersinger Series
The namesake "Stolzing" is one of the main characters in Richard Wagner's opera "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg," which trombonist Prof. Carl Lenthe often performed during his time at the Munich State Opera. In the opera's story, the young knight Walther von Stolzing competes in the Nuremberg singing contest to win the beautiful Eva.
Eva, the daughter of a goldsmith, falls in love at first sight with the young tenor "Stolzing." In the contest, his outstanding singing talent ultimately convinces the judges, so he is not only admitted to the mastersingers' guild but also wins his beloved Eva as his wife.
Carl Lenthe is Professor of Music (Trombone) at Indiana University Bloomington (Jacobs School of Music) and co-developed the "Stolzing" model by combining characteristics of American and European brass instrument making.
