No clarinet and no saxophone plays without a mouthpiece and reed. Strictly speaking, the mouthpiece is the crucial part, as it forms the so-called sound generator, also called the tone generator by acousticians. The beautiful, expensive clarinet made of fine wood and the silver-plated or gold-lacquered shiny saxophone are - physically speaking - "only" the resonators.

So mouthpiece and reed deliver the primary sound waves, to which the instrument then responds, similar to a well-tuned transmitter. So: without a good mouthpiece (and equally good reed), nothing works at all.

This is how even an affordable instrument sounds like a master instrument!
