With Pioneer’s multitrack sequencer SQUID, you can rocket at the speed of light into the endless depths of your creativity. This inspirational tool is part of our TORAIZ series of musical instruments and production gear and will be the centerpiece of your studio and live setup. The SQUID manages your workflow and gives you the power to develop new music styles by effortlessly creating unique patterns and phrases at the push of a button. Connect up to 16 external devices simultaneously and sync and control them via a variety of inputs and outputs. The connections are compatible with a wide range of devices—from DAWs and hardware instruments to modular synthesizers, vintage synths, and drum machines.

And since you control everything from one place, you can fully focus on developing your music.

Intuitive Workflow

Tap the 16 multicolor LED rubber pads in the “Step Edit” section to create phrases. Adjust step parameters and play live like a keyboard. Combine various sequencer functions like interpolation and harmonizer to develop new sounds.

16 Multicolor LED Pads

The 16 multicolor illuminated pads let you switch between functions in a flash. The pads feature independent modes, enabling you to access a wide range of creative functions. Use the trigger mode to record patterns step by step. In scale mode, you can play scales and record performances, easily varying expression by the strength of your key presses.

Interpolation

With interpolation, you can create phrases on the fly. Set parameters for the start, middle, and end of steps and easily assign pitch and dynamics to bring your ideas to life.

Harmonizer

Get inspired by exciting chords. The harmonizer function lets you assign up to 6 chords to the pads, record chord progressions step by step, and intuitively develop captivating phrases.

Transpose Mode

Tap the pads to switch phrases in transpose mode. This feature lets you instantly adjust the key of a phrase or quickly raise the pitch of a step. The sounds you create can be recorded in real time.

CC Mode

You can edit up to 5 CC controls of your external device. For example, if the monophonic analog synthesizer TORAIZ AS-1 is connected to track 1, you can assign a handful of MIDI CC numbers and sequence them step by step.

Randomizer

Need some inspiration? Try randomly changing the parameters of a step. The phrase changes and can spark new ideas. SQUID individually controls trigger values for on/off, pitch, gate, velocity, and CC mode. In addition to normal sporadic sounds, trigger on/off and pitch use the Euclidean algorithm for more musical randomization—ideal for quickly generating phrases.

Pattern Set Mode

This sequencer features 16 MIDI tracks, and you can create up to 64 patterns per track. You can recall pattern sets anytime by saving a pattern combination from any track. This lets you conveniently review the rough framework of your composition.

Chord Mode

Touch one of the 16 pads to play a perfect chord. The SQUID knows 18 chord sets, and its built-in knowledge of chord progressions helps you create fantastic music.

Arrange Phrases in Real Time

Rearrange the phrases you created in the Step Edit section to develop your ideas the moment they come to you. Enhance your sounds with performance features like playback direction, speed modulation, and groove bend.

Speed Modulation

Create unique grooves by varying the playback speed of patterns. Switch between 6 waveforms like triangle and sawtooth, adjusting mix and intensity.

Playback Direction

Create new multi-phrases from a pattern by changing playback direction. Try the unique zigzag or clockwise directions using the SQUID’s 4 x 4 pads. You can use a total of 48 different playback directions by combining reverse, switch back, and flip with the 6 different playback modes.

Groove Bend

Alongside “Swing,” which automatically delays trigger timing, the SQUID offers the world’s first Groove Bend function on a sequencer, letting you influence trigger timing in real time via a slider. Use the slider to delay, accelerate, and develop grooves as if you were playing an instrument.

Rhythm Control

Tap the rhythm button to repeat part of a pattern. Or activate the trigger probability function to adjust the likelihood of a note sounding. Combine this with other functions to intuitively create new phrases, rhythms, and fill-ins.

Tempo Control

By changing the playback speed of a sequence in real time, you can intuitively create slow or fast phrases. Simply hold down the SPEED CONTROL button to double or halve the speed.

Melodic Control

Use the scale knob and arpeggiator to change scale and key. The SQUID automatically adjusts the pitch of the pads (steps) according to the selected scale and key, making it easy to change pitch effortlessly.

Secure Your "Happy Accidents"

The SQUID records your performance data in the background so your self-created phrases won’t be lost by accident. If you like something while experimenting, you can recall and save it as a pattern for your next track using the Time Warp function.

Connect a Wide Range of Devices

The SQUID features a USB-B port, MIDI connections, 2 sets of CV/Gate outputs, as well as clock and DIN sync inputs and outputs. This lets you combine the power of your DAW with modern, modular, and vintage synthesizers and drum machines. Signals are automatically converted.

Fast Import and Export

Transfer patterns, projects, and MIDI clips quickly and easily between the SQUID and your PC or Mac using the SQUID Manager. Import a pattern created on your DAW into the SQUID, arrange it intuitively with its powerful features, then send it back to the DAW.
